CALLING ALL HUMANISTS, ATHEISTS, AGNOSTICS, AND OTHER FREETHINKERS:

http://www.humanlight.org

What do we have to celebrate this holiday season? What do you hope for in the future?

HumanLight is hosting a HumanLight card and ornament design contest for secularists of all ages as a way to positively answer these questions and more with artistic expression.

ELIGIBILITY:
Category 1: Ages 11 and under.
Category 2: Ages 12-17.
Category 3: Ages 18 and up.

One entry per artist. All media, (painting, printmaking, collage, digital art, photography, or perhaps something even more creative?) is accepted.

TO APPLY: Email the image as a high resolution (at least 300 dpi) JPEG
to humanlightcontest@gmail.com. In the body of the email, include the artist's name, age, what country and state (if it applies) he or she is from, and what method he or she used to create the image.
DEADLINE for entries is November 22, 2006.

Judge: Martha Knox is a fine artist, Humanist celebrant, an art teacher to
children ages 4 through 17. She resides in Philadelphia, PA, and is
an active member of the Humanist Association of Greater Philadelphia.

Prizes: Three images will be selected, 1 from each age category. Cards and ornaments displaying all three winners will be available for purchase at the HumanLight merchandise webpage. Each prize winner will receive an ornament and set of cards with their image, as well as some HumanLight candy!

All images in this contest are owned by the artist. By submitting images to this contest, the artist agrees to grant the HumanLight Committee the right to print or otherwise re-publish the submitted images in marketing or web materials for the purpose of promoting HumanLight so long as credit is given to the artist as the original creator of the image(s). All proceeds from HumanLight merchandise sales will go toward further promotion of HumanLight.

Do you have a higher resolution version of your avatar, marf? Possibly 300dpi or greater?

I don't know why the New Jersey Humanist Network decided to hold the event on Chirstmas eve. I know I will be stuck with my family.

Are you going to be attending the Pennsilvania event? It's only about 1-2 hours from where I will be.

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.
- Isaac Asimov

Ricky, my group - The Humanist Association of Greater Philadelphia - will have its HumanLight celebration on December 17th at the Old Mill Inn at 18 Horsham Road, Hatboro, PA. The price will be $20.00 and we should have an online RSVP set up in about a week or so. (Our website is www.hagp.org)

Socializing with drinks starts at 12:30 and then we have an emcee who gives an intro at 1PM, then lunch, then a professional story teller, then a speaker from the Princeton Ethical Humanist Fellowship, and finally a social hour. The whole event is set to be family friendly and we're trying to get people of all ages to come, with so far pretty good luck. It's not nearly as large as the NJ celebration, but then, this is only our first year doing it.

Check out this video on HumanLight. Joe Fox is the Executive VP of the Humanist Association of Greater Philadelphia now, since he moved here from NJ.
