I recently did a focus group (i'm a poor grad student, they offer money) which involved a pilot for a new tv show. It was called "Forbidden Secrets". Aside from the incredibly stupid soap opera like name, I was pleasently surprised. The premise was to tell the "truth" about various subjects and so on. They explained the use of the Rorsharch (sp)test and Lie detectors using actual scientists and experts(I think?).
other items covered and explained or debunked were, Alligators in NY sewers, some boring crap about surviving a plane crash, (Pray!!)and an amazingly interesting explanation of French ambulances and how they may have contributed in the death of princess Di(ed).
Sure it had much of the hokey music, teasing lead ins, and so on that makes the media such a fount of crap, but there was some good content.
Just thought you guys would find it kind of interesting.
BTW the host was the 6 million dollar man.

All right. The name is "Forbidden Secrets" but it might Change. As for the network, they did not say.
And the lady di(ed) thing really surprised me. I usually avoid anything to do with royalty, etc. Apparently the french have actual MD's in the ambulance not paramedics like we do. Their theory is to stabilize patients before transport. Di had a nick in her pulmonary artery but was not in immediate danger of death, although without surgery she would definately bleed to death. The doctor in the Ambulance could not know this and was waiting for her pulse, bp and so on to stabilise. They waited on scene for 40 minutes or so in the ambulance and then left for the hospital, averaging something like 15 KPH on the way, because their theory is that higher speeds could cause injury to the patient. When Di went into arrest on the way to the hospital, they pulled over and attempted resuscitation. It took something like 2 hours to get her to the hospital.
They recreated the scene as it happened (probably?) and then as it would have happened if the french used the standard practice as used in the U.S. The U.S. method would have gotten her to the hospital in I think something like 7 minutes.
This should all be on the web somewhere i'm sure. Not the show stuff, but the Di stuff, if one cares to wade into that cesspool.
Another cool thing, was that in the promo for the next show (yes they put it in the pilot) they had a story about Bigfoot. I sure hope that they do that issue in a proper manner, if the show makes it onto TV. I've always been fascinated by bigfoot, but alas my childhood dreams of meeting one were sadly squashed by my foray into the world of science.

There's also a Michael Shermer program called "Exploring the Unknown" on Friday evenings, of all places, the Fox Family channel. The irony. Of course us skeptics know Shermer, editor-in-chief of The Skeptic magazine. He, of lately, has been invited to author a column in none other than Scientific American mag!
Anywho, his Fox program debunks this and that, which is great. Would like to see more of these programs. But his show segment, last night on psychics - thought it was really weak. Gave him a D- on that one. (what was wrong with Shermer on that one?) But others segments he's done are pretty good pieces.

Bummer, now I know what Megan was talking about. She caught the show and thought it was whacked. That surprised me, because I'd heard it was supposed to be pretty good. For those of you who have talked to her, opinion please. Is she ready for "Demon Haunted World" or "Why People Believe Weird Things"? I don't have kids, so I'm not a good judge of these things. Trish, you have what, a 13 year old. What do you think? (post any answers back on the BA folder, let's not spread out too far here) Lisa

Demon Haunted World should be required reading for high school freshman or at the very least should be required somewhere in high school. I think I read Broca's Brain when I was 12 and part of what made that a good read at that age is Sagan's writing style. While a lot of parents might not like the idea of their kids reading Demon Haunted World, I think it gives it's readers some great insight. I wish that book was around when I was 12.

OK, I can't stand it any more. I am fixing the title of this thread! We don't want anyone coming in looking for information about a show on sceptic tanks
