Interesting article on religion being all in the mind. It's also a good example of both good and bad science (and scientists).

I swear I bristle just seeing Gary Schwartz' name. This guy should have his PhD revoked. How about this for a priceless scientific term:
quote: He [Schwartz] concludes that the human brain is wired to receive signals from what he calls a "Grand Organizing Design," or G.O.D.
I have wondered, do mediums have to look in the direction of the 'spirits' they are communicating with? John Edward sure does see lots of things sitting next to his marks. I mean, it's not like your eyes are going to do you any good, unless perhaps the good 'Dr.' Schwartz would like to conclude that the eyes are wired to receive spiritual photons.

What kind of a question is that? Well, DUH! Of course it's in the mind. How many times when god is talking to someone does anyone else hear it.

quote: That search for the mind-body connection also motivates the work of other researchers, such as Professor Andrew Newberg at the University of Pennsylvania.
"Whether there is a God or not in some senses isn't as relevant to the kind of research we're doing so much as understanding why those feelings and experiences are important to us as human beings," he says.
Newberg observed the brains of Tibetan Buddhists and Franciscan nuns as they engaged in deep prayer and mediation by injecting radioactive dye, or "tracer" as the subject entered a deep meditative state, then photographing the results with a high tech imaging camera. He found that "when people meditate they have significantly increased activity in the frontal area — the attention area of the brain — and decreased activity in that orientation part of the brain."
This isn't what Newberg implies in his book 'Why God Won't Go Away'. In fact, he attempts in the last few chapters to draw the conclusion that because we [humans] have these religious experiences and all we know comes through our senses from outside that the god experience must also come from outside ourselves. Despite his studies showing that the sense of self is no longer well defined. I've yet to figure the logic that has been misapplied here.
[bad grammar]
--- There is no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our world. It underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've known. Sagan

Lemme guess. Swartz recieved his PhD (Piled Higher and Deeper) from Bubba's college and bar and grill. Specific "wiring" to recieve messages from "G.O.D.". Sounds like the same prattling from Creationists.

In this part of the world, there are huge trucks rolling along the highways with 8-foot-tall letters: G.O.D.
It stands for Guaranteed Overnight Delivery.
Now there's a business owner with, shall we say, chutzpah.

I still want to know if engaging in other activities(yeah like sex) that might produce the same results. This sort of data would seem to be almost useless unless they conducted such an investigation.
I'm available BTW It's all in the name of science right????
