Since this is the "Bitch Board:"
Has anyone else noticed that the BABB at this time seems to contain a lot of completely or nearly off-topic follow-ups, or (probably unintended) highjacked threads? Myself and others have started out launching what might be an interesting Astronomy topic, only to have it dovetail into such areas as the Japanese names for the Milky Way, and then on to non-astronomy Japanese names, or discussions about the word "firmament" in threads that started out about Mars, or asked why phenomenon perhaps accepted in physics nevertheless isn't always found in the cosmos. I realize thread topics can drift, but some of them drift into really silly realms, and attempts to post on-topic follow-ups don't phase the "my favorite sitcom" and/or "how many angels can dance on the head of a pin?" posters.

Perhaps some of the posters are kids, and they don't make a distinction between "against the mainstream," "general astronomy," and "scifi movies." Anyway, that's my little tirade. No biggie!

Diversity, independence, innovation and imagination are progressive concepts ultimately alien to the conservative mind.

1.) What about fetching a discussion on parallex ? The axes or the spaces ?
2.) Any suggestions of anthems for the proper surround sound ?

Delta Capricorni?? Is that like some star near Uranus or one of its moons?? I'm probably way off, I know. But you have to remember who your talking to(obviously someone that doesn't know much about anything).

Hi, Megan,

Delta Capricorni is a star, the 4th-brightest star in the constellation of Capricorn. That's how many of the brighter, visible stars are named - for the constellation they live in, and their rank (in brightness). The brightest star in the imaginary constellation of Megan could be called Alpha Megani, then Beta Megani, Gamma Megani, ...

Of course, some of the very brightest stars have unique names, like Sirius, Betelguese, and Altair.

Now, about Uranus: Stygma was telling you that he thinks Uranus is currently near the star Delta Capricorni. Remember, Uranus is a planet (which is a Greek word that means "Wanderer"). The planets move around in their orbits, so they drift across the background stars.

The stars themselves stay put (except for the apparent motion of rising and setting due to Earth's rotation). Actually, they do move a little, but don't stay up late trying to see them moving! It takes very sophisticated equipment and lots of patience to detect it. Several astronomers in the 1700's and 1800's spent their entire careers trying to measure the "proper motion" of stars. (Actually they were looking for something called "parallax", which is not the same as "proper motion", but is measured in more or less the same way.)

I hope this helps, and isn't even more confusing...

Holy cow that was posted a long time ago!! Hello Juliet, I'm Megan....obvisiouly. I used to be here all of the time but It's hard when you have as much going on as I do.....not saying that anyone else's schedule isn't as busy or busier than mine. But anyway, I usually pop as often as I can to catch up on the gossip of the skeptic world.

Lets see, I would help you with your very interesting questions but seeing that I dont know very much about parallex or any anthems for the proper surround sound, so I'll let someone else like BA who knows a lot about that kind of stuff.

Once again, Nice to meet you Juliet.

~Megan~
