The blue, green and even yellow light is scattered away, leaving only orange and red to illuminate the Moon. Standing on the Moon, it would look to you as if the Sun were peeking around the circular shape of the Earth, just like at sunrise or sunset.
Ah yes. And if we were standing there on the lunar surface during the event, since the moon has next to no atmosphere, the lunar sky would remain black, the earth and sun would appear as you described (or perhaps as a dazzling ring of light during lunar totality?) and the lunar ground to our eyes would perhaps turn reddish or pink?
Even though there's no "dust" floating around on the moon to absorb shorter lightwaves, the longer waves have already made it around the earth's atmosphere, proceeded through the vacuum of space and are the strongest to strike the moon during the eclipse. Or am I way off? Just wondering.

Hmmm... I've been having a lot of trouble with the BABB over the last couple-three days... Cannot Find Server errors, or long delays when calling up a new page, sometimes eventually timing out without results.
Anybody else getting this?

Donnie: BABB has been unavailable to me all this evening...but I was able to read it earlier today.
Could just be a temporary server problem.

Folks-
Yes, there have been server problems, but hopefully things are better now. A new computer will be installed this week which should solve everything too.
Now, I have a favor to ask y'all. We have someone posting infantile things to the BABB. You may have seen them: first he posted under the name "hammytrimmytree" and then "anusanus12". You can guess how sophisticated this person is. Anyway, I have deleted the posts (all about poopy, how droll) and tried to restrict the user names used. I have also contacted the ISPs involved.
However, this person can simply keep changing names and posting. There is little I can do about that. My board software is predicated on the idea that people will be adults. So: if any of you see this guy posting, I'd appreciate it if you'd please send me an email (NOT a private message, as I rarely check those). It's hard for me to patrol the whole board all the time.
Thanks!
-Phil

I find that rather insulting to 8 year olds most places considering 8 year olds have more sense than these turkeys show.

On the chance that anyone thought I was being serious, I apologize to any 8-year-olds reading this thread.

I see that Alan Marshall, a big fan of John Newman and his energy machines, is also back--I've argued with him elsewhere, and like any True Believer he is oblivious to logic and evidence. It's a waste of time to debate him, unless you have points you want to explain to 3rd parties.

Well since this is the "bitch board" -- I find it slightly annoying that some BABB posters are currently sending greetings to their pal and mentor "JW" on the new BABB. I'm not loosing sleep over it, just find it slightly ludicrous. I guess they don't know or forgot the reason he was banned. (Not because of his ideas or beliefs, but because of name calling and extraordinary rudeness.) I'm being petty here but hey - a diverse group of us were literally hounded on the old BB for not explaining the universe clearly enough for him or on his terms. He could of course post on the new BABB under a new name, though I don't see how he'd restrain himself from insulting people. He's on other boards now still ranting against Einstein and the "scientific establishment" whom he feels are afraid of a religious interpretation of the universe. Good riddance! I really think the new BB is fun, even the loonies tend to be at least civil.

Grapes of Wrath put in a link to thread on another board with JW, but a search on "JW" on my board didn't yield anything interesting that I saw. Do you have a specific link?

Here's a BB from England with recent posts.
From the same board comes this gem. I like the part about college boys learning relativity only to "impress girls." Well, of course. What other reason is there to study physics? (BTW: The female science majors I met in my college days understood SR more clearly than I did.) ;-)

Don't worry Megan, you'll have the book soon after I do. I can average about a book a day. Now, we just have to wait for Borders to deliver. If the human pez dispensers down there got the order right, I should have it by the end of the week. Lisa

Heehee. Thanks! This isn't exactly War and Peace we're talking here. You can read a few chapters a day pretty easily. But Lisa, you should take your time and savor the book. ;-)
