I ran into Rusty Lander over at apollohoax. He says one of the reasons he doesn't believe our astronauts is because of the lack of media hype. They don't give lots of interviews. Rusty didn't say how old he was, but for those of us to remember the days of only 3 networks, there was quite a bit of hype. So they're not on Dave or Jay's show? So what? These guys are retired and entitled to a little privacy, IMO. If every time I stuck my nose out my door, some nutball wanted to call me a liar (or worse), I wouldn't give interviews either. I haven't read your rebuttal to Lander yet, Piltdown, (off the computer for two days, playing catch-up), but I'm looking forward to it. Lisa

I haven't quite figured Rusty out. I'm not sure whether he does not actually believe in the hoax but enjoys pulling our collective chain, or whether he is a complete P____esque nutter.
Regardless, Jay's stamina at HB busting is amazing. I know I could not keep relentlessly debating yahoos who whose two functioning brain cells do not touch.

Wiley, I was starting to get afraid no one would answer that post. Rusty Lander is clearly a nutcase, but what about this Prince guy? Remember his comment, something like: :"Almost everyone agrees the universe is less than 10,000 years old":? He's a fundie nutter, and a troll to boot. Maybe we can talk Phil into suspending the rules for a couple of hours and flame away. Lisa

It's a good idea, Lisa, but you know how BA wants to keep BABB a family-friendly site...maybe we could do it late at night...

I've seen most of the HB's arguments, since Rusty's arguments are the same, I find his arguments quaint. (I shan't call him Rusty anymore; it makes him sound sweet and innocent.) However the one statement that Herr Lander made that torqued my cookies was when he insinuated that the CIA murdered eleven astronauts.
And Prince ... (shudder). I'm a little surprised BA has not banned him yet. He only comes out from under bridge and responds just enough to skirt banishment. And where the hell does he find those web sites?
Anybody have any guesses on how old these yahoos are?

I think they're both pretty young. Lander cites the lack of media hype surrounding the astronauts as a reason for a hoax. That tells me that he wasn't around when they went to the moon. There was media hype. You couldn't open a magazine or newspaper, or turn on the TV without seeing a story about the moon landing. Lander probably rates credibility with the number of appearances on Dave Letterman. Prince posts a link, then slithers away. This is how a 12-year-old would argue. "Ooo lookie what I found!" So far, I'm behaving myself and staying away from both of them. However, one of these evenings I'm gonna be feeling cranky, out of sorts and perhaps drunk. At that point, all bets are off. I hope Phil forgives me. Lisa

Good point.

Yeah, everyone knows Johnny Carson is the only gauge of credibility.

Remember drinking and posting don't mix. If you need a designated poster, let me know.

B.A. I apologize for using the term "martyrdumb" on your board. As I considered it, it occurred to me that I probably wasn't being fair to the martyrs. They are, in a sense, as much victims as the innocents they kill. The real villains are the rat ass bastard "religious leaders" who take the confusion and doubts of youth and twist it into a weapon of mass murder and the political toads that encourage the system as a means of achieving their twisted little political ambitions. And if I really said what I thought about those people I would probably get censored even on this board.
I thought about posting something to this effect on the tread but couldn't figure out how to express it without skating heavily on already thin ice.
I guess when it comes to this subject, I find it hard to be entirely objective.

BA, gotta go with Espritch on this one. "Martyr" used to mean dying for a noble cause. I think the definition has changed a little. "Idiot" leaps to mind. And since I'm bitching anyway, this "Prince" guy is continuing to piss me off. Do we have another "Conspiracy Dave" here? Or is Prince simply a sock puppet for Dave? Lisa

Now, Lisa, please do remember that the BABB is a family site...

If they know each other, probably a friend or a fan.

Folks:
I do not see why anybody would *lose it* to trampel on true believers discussing their version of archaic science over on BA's forum. It is HIS forum, after all, and he calls the shots over there. He is not coming over here to monitor any of your language, etc., either. Do not spoil Phil Plait's forum just to rail against the silly fools who sometimes wander into any forum with blatently foolish ideas. I would leave Phil Plait's site to Phil Plait to make all decisions.
I guess I have never felt the need to bother Prince. He obviously TRULY BELIEVES what he is stating (poor guy). Leave him to his ignorance. I think that the people there at Bad Astronomy can handle him just fine without breaking any of Phil Plait's rules.
I must admit that I am sorely tempted sometimes *to let off steam*, but I simply think of how terrible it must be to need to believe the baloney that people like Prince present as *GOSPEL*. I also am considerate of Phil Plait's wishes about his own forum.
True believers have little closed minds which could never understand how anybody could think otherwise. Leave them alone to wallow in their own ignorance. I think that the folks over on BA know how to counter such posts without breaking Phil Plait's rules. I know it is difficult. However, it forces a kind of self control on one's own thinking, n'est ce pas?

Good grief ljbrs! I lwas letting of some steam about Prince and Rusty Lander via a method called a "joke". Its Phil's board, his rules, and I wouldn't violate them for anything. I'm learning a lot more on his board now since I don't have to wade through a ton of flame posts. Lisa

I was just worried that you would go over there and get kicked out permanently for no really good reason. I think it is good to have a variety of forums with a variety of rules. Then people can go where they feel comfortable. On Bad Astronomy, the nastiness is hidden in carefully-worded rhetoric without the use of ad hominems to mess it all up. There is disagreement, but it does not go to extremes.
I do not want to see nice people banned from Bad Astronomy and was afraid that you might go over there for fun and get booted out permanently.

Nah, I wouldn't do that. Even on Phil's old board, I don't think I ever called anyone anything worse than and "idiot". Once I implied Conspiracy "Space Aliens Helped the Ancient Egyptians" Dave was a racist, but I was being honest. After I'd given some well reasoned arguments and he still wouldn't listen, I realized what Dave's problem was. To him, these folks were just a little too brown to have accomplished anything. I pretty much gave up at that point. Arguing with a bigot is like teaching a pig to sing.... Anyway, we have this place to vent steam. (Which is what I was doing, sorry you mis-understood) Lisa
