YO! One of my pastimes is watching how words are manipulated. I guess that's why I call myself Orwellingly Yurz.
The latest Bushbuster in the game of Neocon Semantics is the word "surge."
For those of us who remember Viet Nam---and my thanks go out to ones who had to see it up close and horrific---"surge" meant "escalation" when we we're fighting Charlie.
I've been thinking that, insofar as the Busheviks are concerned, maybe the word "semantics" should be changed to "semaniacs!"
Aways "shocked and awed," but never surprised by Bush, I remain,
OY!

I hadn't heard the term. I assume the Bush bunch are using the word, "surge" in advocating an escalation in Iraq, right?
The funny thing is, a sudden huge increase in military force could indeed have a effect. But, just like with LBJ in Nam, what I expect to see are incremental changes that can easily be absorbed by the opposition. That's what "escalation" was. Except for a local effect, these guys presently don't have the forces to be able to call any escalation they could muster a "surge," as that implies something far more radical (and maybe much more effective) than an escalation.
It does appear the they are readying an escalation, bringing up a few thousand additional troops into Kuwait, ready for deployment in Iraq. They are pulling out of Anbar province, leaving that for Iraqi government forces. What I expect is that they are planning to put most of the new and relocated US forces into Baghdad. Maybe in a sudden fashion, thus the "surge." This might help with the sectarian civil war in the capital, but the opposition can always focus on other areas, since we'll be weaker there. And it probably will do little to stop suicide bombings even in Baghdad. Looks like Bush is willing to settle for simply having Baghdad itself looking a tiny bit safer.
