As bitter winter continues, dozens of Emperor penguins mysteriously arrive in Washington, Oregon and BC Seattle, Tuesday, December 19, 2006 (Seattle Times) -- Utility workers continue to struggle to restore power to thousands left in the cold due to transmission lines downed by ice and wind. Now, it seems Mother Nature herself is deliberately mocking the shivering Northwest. Dozens of Antarctic penguins have been see along the coasts and inlets, from Oregon to British Columbia.
Scientists insist the Emperor species lives only in Antarctica "They simply don't belong here," said UW ornithologist Suzie Puzi, referring to the 57 Emperor penguins that have been counted so far. "They really can't be here, but there they are, waddling down Galer Street in the snow. Either these penguins escaped from captivity somewhere, or something really terrible must have caused them to swim all this way from Antarctica."
