Ayman al-Zawahri, Al-Qaeda's second in command, has called upon Somalia's defeated Islamic Courts Union fighters to keep battling.quote:
"I call upon the Muslim nation in Somalia to remain in the new battlefield that is one of the crusader battlefields that are being launched by America and its allies and the United Nations against Islam and Muslims," al-Zawahri said.
The ICU launched an decidedly ill-considered offensive upon the weak "official" government's single town, Baidoa, in late December, prompting powerful Ethiopian forces to enter the fray in a large scale counter-offensive. (My guess is that the Baidoa government and its Ethiopian allies were counting on, and had planned for, such a boneheaded error by the ICU.)
The ICU began to be routed at once. Since they first started running, they have rarely paused to fight, swiftly giving up the capital of Mogadishu, and then Kismayo, without sieges.
The ICU, including reported Al-Qaeda fighters, have now been split into two groups. One goup is in Kamboni, a miserable little coastal town (see for yourself on Google Earth!) at the extreme southern tip of Somalia. Kamboni is reported to have an Al-Qaeda training facility, from which the bombings at the American Embassy in Kenya were planned. In Kamboni, the ICU have their backs to the US Navy-patrolled sea, and are surrounded on land by superior forces. The other ICU remnant is in and around Dhobley, an inland jungle town next to the heavily guarded Kenyan border. With no further retreat possible, vicious fighting continues.
Ayman al-Zawahri exhorts the Somali jihadis:quote:
"Launch ambushes, land mines, raids and suicidal combats until you consume them as the lions and eat their prey," al-Zawahri added.
Al-Zawahri may be a bloody genius at unconventional warfare, or he may be an idiot at it, but one thing is for certain, for someone from Africa, he doesn't know much about lions. I've never heard of lions using suicide tactics to get their prey.
