I'm asking, because I'd like to get in touch with the forum admin.
Rebecka isn't answering the e-mail I've sent (too busy?) and my registration is still waiting to be approved by mod/admin.
The thing is that skepchick is using the same forum software as Skepticality, but skeptchick is still suffering from an incredible about of spam-registrations. I've installed a very successful SPAM-bot blocker at Skepticality which I think would benefit skepchick as well...
I see no reason why we couldn't/shouldn't cooperate on stuff like this.

JREF forum software stinks!
I wrote a PM to Rebecca, but when I ckicked "Preview", it had logged me out! So I backed the browser, but the message was gone. Only the suject line was intact. Why keep the subject line and not the message body?

Yeah I know, Dave.
I guess every software has their quirks. I finally managed to get the message through. I don't know why I got logged out while I was typing that message. Perhaps there was some kind of time-out and I didn't have the "Remember me" box checked.
Derek seems to have some difficulty getting the databases converted, so we'll just have to wait and see. Maybe Skepticality won't make the switch from phpBB to vBulletin after all. I don't mind staying with phpBB since after I installed the VIP-code anti-spam measure and added the Strike-out formatting button, I'm getting confident enough with tweaking the software... |

Still, it would be nice if I didn't have to sign in every time I visit the forum... |

Try bypassing the main page and go straight to www.skepticality.com/phpBB It looks like the main page is messing with the cookie that controls the auto-login feature. Since I have no clue as to how websites handle cookies (read and write and so on...) I don't know how to fix it either. |

Rebecca posted something a while back about a backlog of new members and a log jam and an apology to all. Sounds like it happened again.

"I need people who would like to help moderate the forum. We talked about it before, but there never really was a need. Now, I get dozens of spammers trying to sign up every day, which leaves me backlogged on approving new members. I'd only need a few people who could pop in every day, check for new user registrations, delete spammers, and keep everything working nicely on the forum. Fairly simple stuff, as we generally don't bother with censoring people around here."

The spam problem is really hitting forums hard. I delete lots of fraudulent registrations on many different forums every day. It's time consuming but utterly necessary. It's just sad that search engines results are so easily manipulated that spam like this is worthwhile. You want forums indexed because so many postings are useful but once the web's jackholes realized what they could accomplish by splogging it's become a near crisis. For now I am just grateful that the spammers are so transparent when they register. If they were clever they'd be harder to detect. Now wouldn't that be fun.

The setup I made for Skepticality has been rather successful. We dropped from 60 bogus registrations/week to only one in two weeks.
It's a control question that requires the registrant to do some modest digging in order to find the answer to the control question. It seems to discourage most spammers. |

One of the easiest filters would be one that disallows a .ru extension. 90% of the emails I am dealing with have these. I dont recall a single .ru extension for a legitimate registration.

What about those registrations that have you copy some twisted letters? Maybe when you register with skepchick, Dr M, you could help them out.
Rebecca is giving a paper presentation at TAM about starting a blog. If there's anything I can share with them, let me know also.
Thanks.

Most spamming-scripts that can bypass those. And most of the spammers who register manually can just type in those letters.
The point of having this control-question is that it is customized for that specific forum. Which means that scripts made to auto-register forums with phpBB-software can't handle them. Current scripts are not smart enough. And the minor extra job a new user has to through to find the answer will make the manual spammer waste too much time, so he most likely abandon it.

I finally got word from Rebecka. They are changing software, so they will not have any need of my services. |
