Well, since this was started over at BABB, what would you do if(never mind the semantics nor the specifics) a huge blast of radiation(or whatever it was mentioned over on BABB) from 12 LY away and is on its way here.

work like he!! to find a way to shield against it, globally or locally...or work to find a way off-planet...or really live it up for 12 years!!

The Van Allen Belts do a pretty good job of shielding us from radiation. I am not worried. I can always put my head under my pillow and pray...

About music: How about a little Mozart, Beethoven, Saint Saens, Mendelssohn, or Bartok instead, for a change of pace? It is said that such music is great for the mental processes.

I was kinda assuming that the radiation was such that it would penetrate the Van Allen belts.

don't forget the Bruckner and the Mahler!

Gamma rays are not charged particles and can pass through magnetic field with ease...exactly like light (Gamma Rays are light, just really energetic).

What Would Bozola Do (WWBD)?

Tax breaks for the rich, try to start a war with China, encourage fuel consumption over conservation, try to make abortion illegal, have daily prayer sessions in the Dept. of Justice, and give stewardship of my countries natural resources to corporate interests.

channeling!? channeling!? channeling!? Yeesh! well guess that would be a problem. So take two metaphysical star dust pills and call me in the morning. That should prevent anymore channeling.

Zandermann:

Or Charles Ives?

==========

Actually, going back to my first topic, I understand that the Van Allen Belts can handle a lot of radiation. The ones who need to worry are the astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS). In addition, our artificial satellites need to go into safe mode in time to avoid damage. Our global positioning system should take a beating. It is useful to know that such radiation is coming so that we can get prepared. I have my pillow at the ready to cover my head in an emergency.

On the other hand, nothing can save us from those neutrinos.... Of course, neutrinos go right through everything and seldom interact with anything. So much for that.

I am not going to sit here frozen with fear. I will get my crystals and my special beads, my Tarot cards, and look up my horoscope for the occasion (although, of course, the astrological sun positions have nothing to do with the reality of the actual positioning of the zodiac. The astrologers are 2000 years or so behind the times astronomically. Two of my friends' children have Ophiuchus as their sun sign. It makes for a great conversation piece for both of them whenever anyone asks them for their "sign"!

Of course, they are NOT "true believers" and their father has already signed on here (but not yet posted.

gotta say that I've never gotten along well with Ives...give me a bombastic German like Mahler or Bruckner or Beethoven any old time

Thank you for pointing that out, again. I completely missed your earlier identical statement.

Oh dear, I wrote with the idea that it was radiation (which can also be cosmic rays and not always electromagnetic radiation alone). Of course, when I looked back, a post of yours intervened with the gamma ray information. If it is gamma rays, look out. Then again, gamma rays, like all light rays, can be emitted and absorbed, unlike neutrinos which can pass through almost everything, usually without making themselves known. An infinitesimal number of neutrinos will be recorded by neutrino astronomers using neutrino detectors usually built in neutrino observatories in abandoned mines.

Gamma rays can be stopped with a sufficient amount of the proper materials, perhaps lead. (Now do not ask me to list the proper materials, because I do not have the foggiest idea of what they might be. However, I am certain that astrophysicists will think of something. That's right, ljbrs, leave it to somebody else to solve the problems. Shirking responsibility is the easy way out...)

For others (because I am certain you know): Charles Ives (one of my favorites -- I have a lot of favorites) is an early 20th Century American composer.
