Once upon a time, and not all that long ago, it was the fashion to refer to Catholics as "mackerel-snappers." This was due to their church's quite healthy directive to eat no red meat on Fridays. So, they had fish whether they liked fish or not. God's Vicar on Earth's orders. Thus the term flourished in the vernacular, even among Catholics -- those with a sense of humor, at least.
So, now KFC has decided to take us back in time. The company wants to sell a fish sandwich and is trying to boost sales by getting the Pope to sign off on it. When/if this comes to pass, will we start referring to those who eat the sandwich on Friday as Mackrel Snackers?

KFC might have their foot in the door on this. (They already serve the Pope's Nose in many locations.)
However its hard to say if the Vatican will accept the idea or reject it. If offended at first, they could soon "turn the other cheek" and be forgiving considering how tasty KFC's Holey Mackerel is.
