how about showing up outside the police station in black robes, with a big pointy hat and a (plastic) cauldren. Little dry ice, some nonsence mumbling, and you might scare the crap outta those dweebs. ;)

From the ridiculous to the down right stupid....
The thought occures that if this fundi fuzz fails to control traffic, they are being derelict in their duties. If a competitor should get clobbered, the city could have a big-time lawsuit on their hands, and rightly so.

I can't say for sure, but it looks like from the wording of the article that this triathlon isn't a city sanctioned event inasmuch as it is entitled to police assistance. I bet these are off-duty officers and the event organizers are trying to hire them for security, like you often see in department stores. Otherwise, I can't imagine this would be allowed if it was part of their official duties.
