The January 13, 2002 topic for Astronomy Picture of the Day was a lady named Hypatia of Alexandria (370? - 414 AD). She was an early astonomer and philosopher who made important contributions to the field of geometry. Here are two quotes attributed to her:

"Reserve your right to think, for even to think wrongly is better than not to think at all."

"To teach superstitions as truth is a most terrible thing."

With thinking like that, it should come as no surprize to anyone here that she met her death at the hands of a mob of angry Christians.
