TLC & Discovery channels both have good shows, but the problems are that, for 1, TLC was started by Discovery channel(who also brought us Animal Planet); and 2, most of the good shows they do have, like shows on roller coasters , were made years ago. About the only new shows I've seen on TLC have centered around robot wars. Fun stuff, but not too educational, IMO.

quote: But do you watch 700 club? I just don't have the willpower to keep away from Hoagland's web page to see what stupid thing he's up too. Morbid curiosity I suppose. Anyway, remember when Pat ran for President? I would SERIOUSLY contemplate emigrating to Canada...
Um, I was offered a job in Canada about that time... Yes I have/do (on occassion) watched the 700 Club. Usually a stream of foul inventive language flows forth at his holier than f***ing thou drivel. My Southern Baptist Hellfire and Damnation Grandfather, watched people like Billy Graham, Jerry Falwell, the 700 Club and any other loon spouting religion on the TV. When I spent summers with them the only place to go to get away from the TV (my grandfather was mostly deaf) was out behind the barn.

quote: I wanted to start a whole new topic called "What in the heck is up with TLC and DISC channels?" I was out of the country for 11 years, and kept hearing about these two channels. I was excited, ooohh some real science on TV! What do I get? Ghosts. UFOs. Spoon-benders. There is some good stuff on both channels, but with their titles, why should I have to take the time to shake the gold from the dross? Has it always been that way?
Nope. I first got TLC about 8 or so years ago and watched it nearly non-stop. They had some great stuff on it. Discovery was that way too. Then all of a sudden they just went down hill, and quick. I've given up on TLC, but Discovery has come out with several sister channels that are pretty good, actually, Discovery Health, Discovery Wings, Discovery Kids, Discovery Science (which is what the orginal use to be like), and a couple more I don't remember I think. I hope History channel doesn't go the way of TLC, BUT they do show Haunted History. In a way it's entertaining, ghosts don't bug me like some of the other pseudoscience crap, amd they are more even handed about it then some of the TLC shows are, but still shouldn't really belong on a serious channel.
BTW I finally caught Shermer's show on FoxFamily "Exploring the Unknown". GREAT!!! They talked about Roswell this episode, and pretty well nuked the myth, lol. (I wonder if a "skeptic's channel" would be economical feasable, lol)

Over the weekend, I saw a show on TLC on the top ten mysteries of humans, or some-such-crap-like-that, and one of them was faith healing. One of the testimonials had a woman who had(has?) MS. She says that "God" cured her. She also said that others have told her that the MS might have gone into remission. She, as usual, dismissed those people with just a wave of her hand. My reaction? "Lady, what you gonna do when it comes back???"
Anyway, my question is, how big a laugh do you guys have, if you do, at people who do this sort of thing?
Also, I thought of something. What if one of us skeptics were to go to one of these faith healing things. Well, for example, me. I have asthma. I would love to have them try to "heal" me and then I'd prove them wrong by running around the room and then hacking all over the preacher's shoes. You think this might work? Or am I just nuts?

I just found out that the Main Library in Louisville, Kentucky has a "Communicate With Deceased Loved Ones" session every third Wednesday of the month. It's unlikely I can get out of work for this month, but I'm going to try; otherwise next month. I doubt speaking with the Library Director will do much good, but I'll give it a shot.
My kids still love me. |

Sorry, but not a chance!
They most certainly don't have a 100% track record. People that they try to 'heal' walk (or wheel, or are carried) out all the time not 'healed'. Of course, the Holy Spirit wasn't strong enough in them, or they didn't love Jesus enough, or it was always their fault in some other way.

Been listening to George Carlin cds lately. In one he talks about the little known fact of the 2minute warning. We all hear "TWO MINUTES" just before we die, so we have enough time to get our shit togeather. So he had some suggestions as to what to do with that time. One was to get in line at a faith healers. Another one is to give a 2 minute speach ending with "and if I'm wrong may god strike me dead!"

I'd love to see that channel. Equal time would of course be given to all views. They could have a show with just paranormalists response to skeptics. Call it the Rant Hour. Plenty of Scooby Doo reruns. Nova, Cosmos, X-Files followed by a new show YZ that explaines all the differences between that show and reality. Prophecy Time, each week they focus on a different person who claimed to be able to predict the future, and how accurate they realy were. The 666 Club, a religious show dedicated to helping us understand the bible better. I mean REALLY understand what it says.

My mother has MS. Yes, MS can go into complete remission, however, damage to the nerves and brain still occur while MS is in remission. It is absolutely imperative that medical exams and treatments continue while the disease is in remission.
These jackasses don't understand or don't care about the harm they do to people with their false hopes.
(Sorry, one of my rants, I'll shut up now.)

I used to think one could fairly well take what TLC put out,...to the bank. But, sometime ago I noticed a "Foxification" of a number of shows, i.e. ghosts, , near-death/out of body, ufo's, crop circles. Who the hell took over programming there? Now these fringe, junk-science hour shows are infiltrating the Travel channel, History channel.....Discovery?.....It's spreading like a disease.
A style of story telling would usually entail presenting the hoodoo-voodoo subject thru the eyes of a believer, THEN slam-dunk-it the last 20 minutes or so with reality, reasoning, - to expose the subject as a sham or psuedo-science. But now a number of shows DON'T do the routine slam-dunk! They leave it as stupid as subject matter is. Uncontested!
I've written to several of these entities complaining of the same and how they're throwing their credibility straight out the window.
It's almost like a huge conspiracy,...the dumbing-down of our society; and the continual spoon-feeding of anti-intellectual cerebral oatmeal. Yes, some of us are being turned into a dreaded "Stepford-Society" as in the movie, the Stepford Wives.
We're the entertainment capital of mediocracy.

I still have hope for the History channel, they do have 'occult' subjects on shows sometimes but they seem a lot more balanced. There was one on the loch ness monster the other night, and it was pretty damn skeptical if you ask me. I don't mind those types of shows at all if they debunk. TLC use to be really good at that, now it's all pro-nutters crap. Discovery still has some good stuff to, and Discovery Science is what Discovery use to be. I guess not everybody gets discover science though so they put the "wide appeal" crap on Discovery... I actually sorta enjoy "haunted destinations" on Travel. You learn A LOT of local history you wouldn't hear other wise, and the occult stuff is pretty low key. I did see one that had me pulling my hair out about some magical vortex in washington state though, lol.

Oh forgot to mention... Did you notice we have a new troll sniffing around on BA's board? Pancho. Said I didn't "get it" about hoagland. The Y2K people told me the same thing, labeled me a "DGI- Doesn't Get It" and we all know who ended up 'getting it' in that deal :)
He's another one that believes Hoagland (were from mars) AND the moon hoax (but we couldn't get to the moon because of the van allen belt). Talk about not getting it...
