quote: Over the weekend, I saw a show on TLC on the top ten mysteries of humans, or some-such-crap-like-that, and one of them was faith healing. One of the testimonials had a woman who had(has?) MS. She says that "God" cured her. She also said that others have told her that the MS might have gone into remission. She, as usual, dismissed those people with just a wave of her hand. My reaction? "Lady, what you gonna do when it comes back???"
My mother has MS. Yes, MS can go into complete remission, however, damage to the nerves and brain still occur while MS is in remission. It is absolutely imperative that medical exams and treatments continue while the disease is in remission.
Know how you feel. My uncle and aunt both have MS. For my uncle, it has gone into remission, but is now coming back. My aunt, OTOH, is going, but slowly.

Thanks...just these *faith healers* really bug me. My great-grandmother died in a diabetic coma because she quit taking her insulin. She'd gone to a *faith healer* and slowly went blind before eventually slipping into a diabetic coma.
As for the MS remission and continuing damage, this is a fairly recent discovery, if anyone is interested. It's from the last issue of Inside MS (May I think).

I'm sorry to hear about your mother Trish. Having a loved one go through a devasting illness can be hell on earth, and I can sympathize. When my mom was ill, we discovered that loving and accepting each other, warts and all, help tremendously.

Oh forgot to mention... Did you notice we have a new troll sniffing around on BA's board? Pancho. Said I didn't "get it" about hoagland.
I went back and read all of Pancho's posts, although there aren't many. I don't get it either. Does he mean you don't get it because he thinks Hoaxland is right? Or do you not get it because Hoaxboy is obviously a nut, and you'll never convince a true believer otherwise? ::sigh:: You're probably right though, he'll turn out to be a troll. Most people can say what they mean on that board without being coy about it. Lisa

Ah, so you have read my famous patented theorem concerning the apparent periodicity of troll incursions that is a random number based on multiples of a single constant (based on black hole and neutron star eruption intervals, with some factors added in for random human insanity).
Let us derive this important formula:
No. of Days between Troll Visits is equal to a constant that is roughly equivalent to full moon intervals times a whole random number, normally bounded by the maximum no. of brain cells in the avg troll, e.g., 10, then divided by the Root Sum of the Squares of the number of Dr. Dino (Hovind), Hoagland or Moon Hoax sightings per week
In short hand: TV = [C(lun)X RN < 10] / RSS of(HHHfactors).
Thank you, thank you very much.
A pop quiz will be given later...

Okay, who's this "Wired" person? He gave a pretty snotty reply to Chis and Keith's comments on "Tomb Raider". I don't think he even read BA's review. Shouldn't he have stopped for a moment and pondered why the board is called "Bad Astronomy" in the first place? Is he a troll, or a nit-picker? Lisa

We sure seem to have a couple trolls sniffing around, Pancho, Wired, Sequester... No major attacks yet, but it's been really nice for a long time :(
I wasn't sure about Pancho till he made that crack about a student faking a science project which means NASA could have faked the moon landing...
And I hate to remind everybody of this, but school is out for summer, and I'm sure our troll population will increase.
As for wearing my DGI button with pride, I do :) My brother bought a generator last year because they were so damn cheap after Y2K :)
I found it interesting that Hoagland used the phrase "they just don't 'get it'" in his latest drivel. No, I don't get it :)

Here's a quote from Sequester's post:
quote: "If you can't dazzle them with dexterity, baffle them with B.S." - That's the US Government/NASA code of practice isn't it?
Unfortunetly, he has it wrong. It's actually "If you can't dazzle them with red tape, baffle them with paperwork."
Just kidding.

Upon further review of empirical data, my formula for mean time between troll visits must be revised just slightly. The formula calculates the time interval in days, when the value should be in number of posts. Given that change, and assuming all other values are correct, if you go look at the BABB and count up the moon hoax or Hoagland threads in the last day, select a random multiplier of, say, 3, and assume that C is 28, you get a value around 16.5 topic posts occurring between true troll postings.
Egad, this could really predict the behavior of the trolls! The main problem is the random multiplier of the constant, although it is constrained by 10 maximum.
I smell a Nobel Prize!! Time to submit this theorem on bulletin board trolls to Nature (or perhaps The Onion) and let the scientific community have a whack at it.

This isn't astronomy but what does everyone think of the Harry Potter books? At first I thought that they were cool, but ever since I have started with the SFN and BABB boards, my way of thinking has changed and now I dont know what to think about the books.

Megan, as long as you realize (of which I have no doubt) these things are of the fanatsy genre, enjoy. One of my favorites from a while back: The Deed of Paksennarion by Elizabeth Moon.
If you're looking for something different, try some S/F, I'm sure Lisa might have some.

Megan:
Harry Potter is pretty good, for fantasy...if you want something a bit more realistic, check out some short story collections. Favorites of mine when I was younger included Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, Arthur C Clarke, Roger Zelazny...fantasy novels like Anne McAffrey's Pern series are well thought of.
If you want something with a little more hard science, check out Larry Niven. And, as Trish pointed out, Elizabeth Moon is good -- also look into Connie Willis (Doomsday Book is especially good).
