A very, very bad skeptic. Why, it was just yesterday that I used Ockham's razor to debunk a JFK conspiricy theory.

Guys, Guys!
Easy now, you think I would just up and desert my favorite people on the web? It's just been pretty nuts and I also thought it was only fair and respectful to do some research on the information you all gave me before I just start throwing random stuff out. You took the time to answer I owe you the same effort.
quote: You work at a health club? I see, so when you told us that your training had been in engineering you were telling us that your manner of thinking was that of an engineer
(Did the quote thing work?)
Actually no, I have an engineering degree from RIT. It's a long story how I'm here today. Basically I ran the gym in college and trained people there, the school paid for me to get certified. I worked in the pharmaceutical industry for a little while and couldn't see doing the engineering stuff the rest of my life. So I didn't know where I was going when I finished school, I just prayed about it. A friend of mine invited me to a concert for an artist he was working with and when I met the guy he asked what I did for a living. I told him I was finishing my degree and I had my own business doing personal training. He told me how he was always tired and sick and his back would bother him. So I gave him some tips and advice and he asked me to train him in California. He flew me out to CA and I trained him for a while, his back felt better and next thing I know I finished college and moved out to CA. I started working with some actors and such, and before I knew it here I am. This of course is the much, much shortened version. I thought I would spare you guys. If you want a really laugh type in my name Dino Nowak in yahoo.com and you'll see some stuff on me just don't laugh to hard.
So a long explanation, but yes I do have an engineering degree.
I'm working on a book now called ESP Wellness which stands for Emotional Spiritual and Physical Wellness. Thats why I'm in some of those magazines and such. Sorry for all the info I know we should be debating, but you guys are pretty cool I enjoy catching up with you all.

Hey, I'm not laughing. Is that you on the cover? If so, you are kind of cute for a Christian. Mind if I ask where in Calif. do you live? No, not your address just the general area. I'm in the Valley!

Either you're easily impressed, Xev, or you don't watch ER. And I highly doubt you're easily impressed. Dude reminds me of Noah Wylie.

It's a stage name. You know him better as Noah "Wile E." Coyote.

no-expert replies in short form: (4 kids here driving me nuts, but need to respond anyway).....
1:I am prone to believe in Chaos Therum rather then evolution at this point, but what flood?
2:when fish fossilize, I'm pretty sure it is not due to how they died, nor does it show most of the time how, let alone how quickly. So what if a fish died fast, It may mean alot stuff died fast or just the fish. In either case little evidance for a flood.
3: First off, wasn't it April of 1947? Second, Ask any north americian first nation if that ever happened again. Not the same you say? Take a closer look at the west bank.
4:Continues to prove my first real own thought I ever had in my life, was right. Most people are fooled easy.
5:"1 in 10 -40,000 " Actually the odds are much greater then that, but even that is small when measured against the age of the earth. Another point, your confusing RNA with DNA.
6:"we do not follow humans we follow the Lord " Your wrong, you are following humans. Unless your instructions in your god come from him/her? directly, without human assistance, your just following man.

No, it has nothing to do with the age of the Earth. And, to be accurate, the odds aren't 1 in 10 -40,000. The odds are ONE-period. It is what happened in the past. The odds on any event that did happen having happened are ONE. Because something else didn't happen. If you bend over at the beach the odds against your picking up one particular grain of sand are a zillion to one, but once you've got it in your mitt the odds that you have picked it up drop to ONE.

quote:
OK. Let us start with a tree dwelling rat like creature (according to a National Geographic article I read some years ago, some rats may live their entire life in the top of a palm tree). Now imagine that some of our tree dwelling rats develop longer forelimbs. Will this be a competitive disadvantage? For a ground dwelling rat it would be since it would produce an awkward slow gait. But for our tree dwelling rat it could be an advantage. The long forelimbed rat could obtain choice fuits or other tidbits out of reach of shorter limbed cousins. He could also cross over to a limb farther from the one he was on. Check out an orangutang sometime. Their forelimbs are much longer than their hind limbs. This is because they spend most of their lives hanging around in trees. Those long forelimbs are very useful from grabbing limbs and vines. The question of wether a genetic mutation is advantageous depends a great deal on the environment you inhabit.
Of course our proto-bat will from time to time find himself facing gaps in the canopy that he can't reach across. The old shorter forelimbed critter would just climb down, scamper over to the other tree and climb up. But our long forelimbed proto-bat has a problem with scampering along the ground, so he needs to find another way across. The most obvious solution is to jump across and use those long forelimbs to snag a limb on the next tree.
Now suppose one of these proto-bats is born with a mutation that results in a fold of skin under it's arms. Once again, for a ground dwelling rat this would be a bother. But for our proto-bat, this is a boon since it provides a convenient gliding surface that would extend the range the creature could leap between trees. At this point the path from this leaping gliding long forelimbed proto-bat to a true flying bat isn't all that hard.
The above description of bat evolution is purely speculation on my part. I have not studied the fossil record concerning bat evolution so I can not say with certainty that this is how bats evolved. But the path outlined meets the basic requirement of evolution: each incremental step along the path must confer an advantage to the species within the context of it's environment and life style. Natural selection will do the rest.
This is why I prefere Chaos therory over evolution.
In your example, the genetic mutations are random, and of a great leap regardless of how small the physical change is.
In a nut shell, Choas says that the mutations are not random. They are cause and effect. The rat (photo-bat) is changed by the enviourment, and during change changes the enviourment itself.
The tree dwelling rat is changed by the trees growing apart for example.... so the rat starts to to change as a result, as it changes the other life around it is also changed, in turn changing the way a preditor reacts, in turn changing the way a parasite lives, in turn changing something else, in turn causing the trees to start growing higher, in turn causing the proto-bat to get bigger, in turm etc.... etc.... etc...
