You mean Lisa's never taken you on a snipe hunt!? Get your flashlight and head outside where there's no one around and look for a snipe. They're everywhere but very shy. Now you must be quiet if you want to catch one.

Then after you go on your snipe hunt try finding a picture of the snipe in a wildlife book for your area!

2 1/2 hours? Unless you are going out in the middle of the night, you are gonna have to wait for a few more hours.

Hiya Megan & James.

Common Snipe, Rynchops niger...used to be rather common out here on the left coast. Funny looking things; like a softball with a long bill. The best place to spot them is on old fence posts near upland marshes. I've been birdwatching for twenty-five years out here.

Their eyes are on the side of their heads...you can actually catch one by slowly walking up to one from straight ahead of it - that's in their blind spot...they can't see you. To catch one you need to bring a bag and pop it over the bird...DO NOT try to grab it. Those long needle like bills are DANGEROUS! A friend of mine had a snipe poke it through his hand. Like most birds, they become totally docile when they can't see, so you have to be fast. Just make sure that you are wearing good eye protection just in case you miss. Snipe always go for the eyes.

Hunting season is usually October, and in most of Washington you are limited to a three bird limit.
