I ran across two articles.
One said that the Japanese version of "Pearl Harbor" was going to cut out the lines of characters calling them "japs". In fact that movie was already so PC it only used that word twice.
The other article I read was about Tora! Tora! Tora! and how anti-japanese it was. Which pissed me off becuase it was a collabartion between japanese and american film makers. Japanese wrote and directed the japanese scenes. The article's reason? They called the japanese certain racial slurs during the movie... (I don't really see "jap" as a racial slur, it's short for japanese)
EXCUSE ME??? Of course they did, they just had the shit bombed out of them.
So let me get this straight. If you're making a war movie, you can shoot guns at them, shoot their planes down, bomb innocent factory workers, blow them up, fill them full of bullets, but you can't ever never ever do the most horrible thing imaginable and call them names????
I'm of strong german background and never ONCE was I offended during a wwii movie when they called them krouts or jerries, or huns during wwi movies, or whatever.
What the hell is wrong with these PC idiots???
Racial slurs are bad... But they should not be cut out of historical movies...
okay, rant over.

PC Movie Disclaimer:
This film may contain some racial slurs relevent to the period. These are not currently acceptable terms for use in the new highly enlightened society we are currently attempting to promote. Please refer to the following list of correct terminology:
japs = Japanese nips/nippers = Japanese also, taken from Nippon (Japan) sh*thead = the yoyo who decided we needed this disclaimer in the first place

But it was my idea, not his....
Usually these disclaimers come from lawsuits...now how do you sue someone for offending you with something that is protected under the first amendment. This is a freedom of speech issue and I would be really worried if the Supreme upheld anything that would limit that freedom, even in the trashy movies that churn out of Hollyweird. (Sorry that's my personal little *soapbox* issue with the whole PC thing. IMHO PCism limits our right to freedom of speech. However, I personally do not ascribe to personal attacks against an idividual or group based on any commonalities! This is an issue that requires watching, because if *THEY* take this limiting of speech any further I would have serious issues with it. However, it has not gone far enough yet to set klaxons off in my head.)

The one thing the PC movements fails to consider is that it isn't the actual word that hurts, its the way its used.
In movies it can be really good to show just how intolarant people can get during wars.

One of the funniest things about the movie "Pearl Harbor" is that none of the soldiers smoked. The most ridiculous omission they make. Just about every soldier smoked (they supplied cigarettes in their rations, for crissake!)
I'm of the opinion that emotions can be like our immune system. Without exposure to certain minorly harmful substances, our immune system weakens, so much so that where previously we could fight off relatively weak germs, now they cause great harm.
If we try to completely sanitize our environment, both physical and emotional, pretty soon we will be so frail that what in the past was easily overcome, now reduces us to whimpering, sick, pathetic lumps of flesh.

AHA! It must be part of a Hollywood plot to weaken us so can easily take over!
We must beware of these things, eh?

My sweet (late) father sadly used the word "Jap" when referring to a person of Japanese descent for a long time after the end of World War II. He had been in the South Pacific during World War II (enlisting on Pearl Harbor Day).
On the other hand, some of my younger brother's best friends were Japanese (architects), and once my family had the (former) Japanese Minister of Propaganda as a guest in our house for well over a week. My late father seemed to have forgotten his antipathy for the Japanese by that time.
Maintaining hatreds are bad for the person holding them.

It is very much humor or sarcasm, Kurisu-san. The original message had the words (insert conspiracy group of your choice) in the middle of it, but the software disagreed with the greater-than and less-than signs. Unfortunately, I can't seem to figure how to edit my own posts.

Edit icon is on the post.asp toolbar. Just run the mouse over a few and you can see what each does.
I also want to say that using the correct language used at the time ads a more realistic feel to a movie. It was how it was back then. Don't water it down.

My family is Jewish, not me though. But I have no problem with any of the anti Jew stuff either.

That's what I'd like to know. People are just too damn sensitive if you ask me. Sheesh, just 'deal with it'.

Na, they aren't, not really. I call my 'room mate' Chinaman all the time. He hasn't moved out yet.

That's why I was wondering. Sarcasm would indicate contempt for my idea. And sarcasm without explanation just seems rude. It's hard to tell reading text like this. Was your intention to implicitly insult me and my idea by making me sound like a right-wing conspiracy nutcase extremist? Or were you just making a good-natured joke?

In this case, the sarcasm was indicating contempt for conspiracy theorists. I have read nearly all of your posts, so have nothing but respect for you. I was merely making a good-natured joke.
BTW, I agree with the disease analogy. Too much of these 'harmful substances' will mace someone callous and sick, and no exposure will make you unprepared for the reality.

Most kind of you. Thank you for the clarification! I would have wanted to defend my idea had you disagreed.

It's been over thirty years now since I "wasted my last Gook." Not a day goes by that I don't hear the explosions in the distance. Those little bastards still show up in my dreams. Cut your dad some slack--there is no way (thanks to him and the brave people like him) that you can possible understand why he felt the way he did. Maintaining the hatred, and even using dehumanizing epithets for the enemy, are what kept him going. These traits may have stuck past the time that they were "socially appropriate" but that's part of the price you have to pay. You can't just turn them off.
