We have discussed some of the Conspiracy theories surrounding the WTC attack here before. When you read news like that one could come to the conclusion that the US Government is deliberately fueling them.

Trying to restrict the investigation in 9/11 and restricting public access into the findings might be a good way to cover up possible intelligence failures, but it is bound to stir the imagination of a few of the more paranoid citizens.
The excuse of not wanting to divert resources from the War On Terrorism is not the best they could have come up with either.

Lars, I think conspiracists can find fuel in the most mundane events, and I do not entertain the notion that the Baby Bush administration has the foresight to conceive of playing off conspiracists, even if they could find a means to profit from such subterfuge. The primary purpose of this administration's general lack of disclosure stems from paranoia, and a lack of respect for the wisdom of the average American, and especially the wisdom of the average world citizen.
Then again, these are not necessarily bad traits in an executive. That said, I am not an authoritarian, and found Niccolo Machiavelli to be extremely misguided, if not insane, but a good read nontheless.
Now, I'm wondering if Mr. Ashcroft uses Il Principe as his primary philosophy of government. I doubt that Mr. Bush ever heard of this work.

Bro, I'll be damned if I can figure it out. This has got to be the strangest administration in recent history. Or perhaps in American history.
The next few years are going to be ineresting, and that's not neccessarly a good thing..

But Tim, what's found in "The Prince" is often true. That's what is scary. Lisa

Indeed. Heck, if I could afford it, I'd have a jet plane fueled and ready from now until Dubya's out of office. Where to? I don't know. But, if things start to get bad, I'm just gonna want out of here.

James, don't come anywhere near Australia, our government is in shambles. W we don't know who to let in, who not to let in. Our government has been found to have lied to us about key issues before the election and our head of state is embroiled in child sex abuse claims. We don't really know who is telling the truth, but our Prime Minister is so busy pissing in George Dubya's pocket, you won't be safe here either.

Well, if Montserrat's volcano hadn't blown it's top a few years back, I'd be planning on moving there, permanent-like. Plan B: Probably Hawaii. At least I'll have a half an ocean between me and the mainland.

Lisa, I agree entirely. Even if Machiaveli's prince could be educated for his role adequately, there is still no assurances concerning human nature, and seperation from the general population. The prince may become as out of touch as...well, let's stop there, and at 'absolute power.'
I often wonder if we could ever learn to apply those lessons learned from the past. So many people seem incredibly anxious to hand over to the Executive the keys to the castle. They don't realize how little distance lies between a paranoid state and a police state. In fact, they seem to be eager to learn the difference.
I'm reminded of this every time our Director of homeland Security issues one of his terribly vague terrorist alerts. I'm reminded every time I hear praise and the fierce need of implementation of the 'PATRIOT' Act, ignoring how little interpretation is required to use these same laws against our own citizens with little or no due process. I'm reminded every damned time our Attorney General opens his mouth to spout his ideas of freedom of religion. I am reminded every time our president speaks without real thought for the consequences, reminding so many in the rest of the world of our national arrogance, and why the US is so despised.
Often, I consider giving support for thes right wing extremists, and then step back letting them destroy each other in a blood bath merely to discover which religious sect, or mationist or isolationist group is going to control the reins of power.
Unfortunately, I am obligated to defend and support the rights of all of our citizens, regardless of the fact that they would deny my liberties without hesitation.
