This is a very interesting and informative article about an Australian fringe party that has achieved some minor success in elective politics:
http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5744,3925581%255E7583,00.html
Also see New Dawn, the New Age conspiracy journal mentioned in the article.http://www.newdawnmagazine.com/
The Australian's claim of a direct link between new age conspira-wackies and the Iraqi and Libyan dictatorships is especially significant. A conspiracy conspiracy? Stranger things have happened. It is worth noting that The Australian has been highly critical of the Bush administration and of some aspects of U.S. war policy.

Germany and the Czech Republic both have organized political parties named "The Friends of Beer".

The U.K. contributed the Monster Raving Loony Party to the world.

But the best we Yanks and our Aussie brethren seem to be able to do is stuff like the Larouchies and One Nation.

What's up with that?

Well, we did manage to come up with Ross Perot and the "Reform" Party...

There was a suggestion for the PRAWN party here. That is the Party for Really Astronomical Waste and Neglect. Their motto was "well, at least we're honest about it".

That is absolutley not true.

There are parties in Poland and the Czech Republic with that name that I am aware of, but none in Germany. Maybee you could count the Christian-Socialits-Union in Bavaria, but they have the absolute majority in that state and are not a fringe party. I think it would be very hard to be politically succesfull in Bavaria without projecting an image of being a 'Friend of Beer'.

On the other hand the active political parties participating at the last parliament elction included a Natural Law Party. (They want to achive world-peace and levitation by meditating. at the monet all they can do are short hops and funny comercials.)

There also were several christian fundamentalist parties, a number of neo-nazi parties, several communist parties, a few ecolgogical extremeists and animal-rights parties, a feminst party, a party for the elderly called the Greys, a party of Non-voters, a party called the Anarchistic Pogo-Party and a Automobile-Driver party.

We also don't need a Mosnter Raving Loon Party, because the established parties were all present at the past Love Parade, wich is BTW legaly the largest political demomnstration in the world.

Ask me if I believe in Democracy.

It did not. They propsed to leave the seats they won unclaimed, leaving the empty chairs as some sort of point in the parliament.
Out of 60 Million possible voters they only got 6000 votes. That is about a fifth of Anarchistc Pogo Party, who I don't think were even serious.

Here in Lubbock a few years ago, the owner of a local comic-book store legally changed his name to The Mad Hatter and ran for mayor, with that name appearing on the ballot as an Independent. He made no speeches, gave no interviews, and officially reported spending about $18 on his campaign. He received 1,629 votes, 4.2% of the total. He is reportedly thinking about a run for the school board. He is on record as opposing creationism, so I may volunteer to run his campaign, especially since there will apparently be little actual work involved.
