The Irish people have narrowly defeated a referendum that would have made abortion laws more restrictive.

OTOH, the laws are pretty restrictive now; apparently abortions can only be performed to save the life of the mother. However, this is interpreted to include cases where the mother might commit suicide if the abortion is not done.
