I'm just having trouble trying to figure out what exactly is wrong with my wrist. I can't see a sepcialist until 12 Apr. We're talking VA here, so you know they've screwed up and not put me in with the proper kind of specialist.

One of the bones in the wrist (the doctor pushed in on the 'snuffbox') has what they think is a cyst in the bone. I'm just looking for any information rather than thinking through worst case senarios. I don't even know which of the wrist bones has the cyst in it.

So if this sounds even remotely familiar to anyone could they please point me in the right direction so I don't worry myself into a ridiculous state.

Thanks.

Link to an Air Force officer who had something similar. (with responses)

Scaphiod bone cyst

More clinical stuff on Scaphoid bone cysts

It appears that in most of the cases, The scaphoid bone (tiny bone near the thumb in the wrist) fractures. This can be fixed by splinting the joint for 1-2 weeks. If a cyst occurs, then minor surgery may be required.

Info on procedure

Hope this helps

Wow VD. Thanks, sounds about like what the problem is that I have. Right down to CTS in the same wrist.

Now my worry - will it affect the Industrial Design that I would like to do for a living?

Well, if everything goes well, I'd say that you could only get better.

The way you posted "info on procedure" gave me visions of Trish tying a tourniquet and digging in there with a pocket knife.

As much as the sight of my own blood doesn't bother me, I really do have an aversion to purposely inflicting pain on myself.

It doesn't appear to affect what you want to do, as long as you pay attention to the ergonomics of the situation. (prevents re-injury) Your doctor would be much better qualified to answer this question than I.

More of a rhetorical question than anything VD. It does mean that I will have to put school off until at least I can use my hand and my wrist can take the abuse of woodworking and working with plastics and metals and drawing and all the other stuff involved. (And that is very definitely a run-on sentence.) Anyway, I'm just concerned that my wrist won't be able to take the abuse I'll heap on it in the ID field.

Good luck with the VA. I retired April 2001, and I'm still waiting for word on my disability claim.

I'm trying to get them to admit I had knee problems that prevented me from re-enlisting. I was declared physically unfit for active because of the knee problems and spending time on light-duty. I think my CO was also ticked that I'd spent so much time on light-duty following my pregnancy. (What he expected with the incision having to be reopened and left open so it didn't get infected again. And my doc decided that I needed at least 3 months after that to get back into shape before running a PFT, so she gave me 'til the new year to get back into shape.) I understand about fighting for the disability.

Trish: would a wrist brace (similar to that used by carpal tunnel sufferers) be helpful/appropriate? If you could stabilize the wrist to prevent reinjury, seems to me that it would help.

The wrist is braced, the problem is that the hand is constantly swollen and the pain is almost constant. I have to admit this is one of the few times I've actually had to take anti-inflammatories/pain killers on a regular schedule to keep the pain at bay. They still don't help much. Even with the brace, if I loosen it, the wrist/forearm just swells to fill the space.

Ahhh, how I miss those days before the pain came creeping in. Now, as I get older, I start each day with an 800 milligram Ibuprofen. It's big enough to spread cream cheese on. I have that, and some coffee for breakfast.....
