Kent "Dr. Dino" Hovind's CSE ministries has jumped on the 9-11 conspiracy bandwagon:
http://www.drdino.com/cse.asp?pg=articles&specific=26
The "timeline" on CSE's page was actually written by one Bill Sardi, a long-time bit-player in fundy conspiracist circles. This is a pretty good example of his reasoning:
quote:
Aug. 6-7, 1998: On August 6, a grand jury hears former White House intern Monica Lewinsky, reported to testify that she and President carried on a sexual affair. On August 7 two U.S. Embassies in Africa are bombed, steering the news headlines away from the Lewinsky affair. The attacks are later blamed on Osama bin Laden. Why would bin Laden time these attacks to divert attention away from the Clinton affair? This has never been explained.

The obvious explanation is that the Lewinsky scandal had no bearing whatever on bin Laden's motive.

[sarcasm] Of course this hasn't been explained. No one wants to admit that Clinton is in league with Al Qaida. I am sure, however, they hold secret meetings all the time. [/sarcasm]
If this isn't the dumbest thing I've ever read ....

The sad thing about this document is that ut is not nearly as made-up as one would hope. Sure there are a lot of inacuracies, unliekly anecdotes and unconected coincidences there, but there reamains just enough of real stuff to feel uncomfortable even to a skeptic.

What happened with the story about the insider trading around 911?

Where did the Anthrax letters come from?

And the facts, that the US did created people like Bin Laden during the cold war, that the US-Taliban realtionship prior to 911 was not nearly as clear cut as people would like us to think, that many people in Washington took advantge of 911-disaster remain.

The entire thing is still a stupid scam but lightyears beyond the usual stuff from Dr. Dino.

A few conspiracy theories are composed exclusively of lies, but not the most successful ones. Insider trading does not in any way suggest that the actual perpetrators were someone other than the bin laden gang. The suggestion that this story has been suppressed is very much at odds with skeptical principles. Establish that it has disappeared or been suppressed. That we "created" bin laden is the claim that is not as clear-cut as many would like to think, especially when it is used to support a conspiracist claim of bin Laden's innocence in the 9-11 attacks. The assumption here is that the US had absolute concious control over everything and everyone who opposed the Soviet Union in Afghanistan, and that it retains that control to the present day for some reason.
Where is the evidence? That many of the present-day jihadis were associated with the US in one way or another during that period is no secret and proves nothing. "Pakistan backed the Taliban, and the US backed Pakistan" is not good enough. That we had some kind of murky relationship with the Taliban proves what? That they were acting on American orders? Dozens of countries had much more clear-cut relationships with the Taliban, and almost every industrialized country provided aid to Pakistan and still does. Why not blame them? It would be just as easy to blame us for the rise of communism for aiding Stalin during the second world war, an accusation that is often made by right wing extremists who would undoubtedly have preferred a nazi victory. The suggestion that the US or Israel actually carried out the 9-11 attacks needs something besides vague innuendoes and connect-the-dots implications to make it work.
