Lately I've been have trouble loading the home page, it starts to load then just locks up. I can direct access the forum and other pages if I type them in, but the home page doesn't seem to work. It could be a problem on my end. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Hmmm, there is no funny business on the home page that should lock you up. Can you tell me what browser and version you are using plus the operating system you are using.

Also, what kind of internet connection do you have? Are you behind a firewall or proxy server? Does this happen if you empty your cache?

I found if I enter the main page URL I can access it, but it takes a few minutes. As for my system - it's old. I'm using Windows 95 and Netscape 4.78. But, all this will be moot soon as Dell is currently building a new computer for me, should be hear in a couple of weeks. So if it's my old system causing the problem it'll only be for a short while. As for hook-up I have a cable modem and no firewall.

Hmmm, it might be the age of your system because I have tested the home page with Netscate 4.72. There are no technologies besides HTML on the home page to cause you to crash.

That's pretty shitty, that we have to buy a new computer to get better service. As one of my teachers said years ago, when I was taking a class in interior decoration, she thought manufacturs do this on purpous to a point. Planed obsolence. She was talking about styles but wouldn't it be nice if we could buy a machine, keep in good condition and continue to use it?
I have a Dell also it came with Windows 95 but a couple of years ago I reluctently let 98 be loaded on. I too have occasionaly had the problem Physiofly mentioned, if I understand correctly. I thought it was maintance to the page!?
There's nothing wrong with this computer, damn if I have to buy a new one just to go on the Net.

Everyone said it couldn't be done. So no one tried. Execpt one little old man who lived in a cave on the other side of the world. He hadn't heard it couldn't be done. So he tried it. He couldn't do it either.

It could be something besides the computer but old 486s or 100mhz Pentiums have a hell of a time. Netscape does have trouble drawing some of the pages but they do finally appear for me but I have a relatively fast system. Internet Explorer draws the front page in about 2 seconds vs up to 6 seconds with Netscape 4.72. That is significant because I have a deluxe DSL setup that is extra fast.

Well, looks like the problem is solved. My new computer finally arrived - now I'm operating off Windows XP and Internet Exploiter. What a difference! No problems opening the main page now.
Thanks for all your help!

LOL, what help, you bought a new computer!?
J/K @tomic.
BTW, while in Costco the other day I bought a new computer game. Insired by H. P. Lovecraft....Cool! But Dennis said I can't play it on my computer, something about having 200 something or other and mine only has 180 or something, don't really know what that's all about but.....guess I'll be in the market for a new computer in a year or so, so I can finally play that game.

Two things:
1) What's the name of the game?
2) Get as state-of-the-art as you can afford, Snake. I bought my desktop back in February. Already know I'm gonna need more hard drive space before the end of the year. If I were you, I wouldn't get less than 50 Gigabytes of memory. Get the fastest PCU they recommend. The one I have, AP Athlon 500, is only 1.67 Gigahertz in speed, but can do two instructions per cycle instead of the usualy one. Basically, it's doing twice the work at half the speed. I think.

The name is NECRONOMICON-The Gateway to Beyond. Reminds me of 7th Guest, which I really like. Another one that I got that day too is Riddle of the Sphinx-An Egyptian Adventure

James I do very much appreciate your trying to help, I think you are very nice to explain. I try not to memorize all those numbers and computer stuff, don't want it to be a part of my life. My room mate likes to buy the latest stuff, when we are in the market for something. So he reads up on what to get when we are ready to buy. I don't like or need too much fancy stuff of any kind but if it's not too much more money, then maybe.
We got a spa for the back yard several years ago. It seats 6 people. Now it's not useable so it's just a giant flower pot, ha ha. But all the time we had it, only he and I went in at the same time so it was kind of a waste. So I'm learning not to get more then I need in the future. Don't want to have a giant paper weight that looks like a computer.

I'll have to do a Google search later. I have not heard of it before.

I see what you're saying, but I look at it like this: Why spend only a thousand for a new computer when you can spend three or four times that and get something that can stilll be used five or even ten years down the road. With my computer, I'd estimate I'll get at least three years out of it. Of course, that's when the warranty expires and then I can tinker with it.

I see what you're saying, but again, like I said above, WRT computers, you do have to consider looking down the road a bit and asking yourself, "Do I want to be back here getting a new computer in a year or so?" Personally, I'd rather not.

But, in the end, it's all up to you and your roommate. I just hope you make a good choice.

Funny James, that's exactly what we spent for this computer, $3000. Now I see they are only $700. Just like with VCR's, the 1st one we got was $1000. Hard to believe, huh?
So you see why I don't want to pay in the thousands now for a computer? I know what you are saying too, and I do appreciate your advice. BTW, I own Dell stock too so it's not like I don't want the company to make money, ha ha. I just don't want to pay when I KNOW the price is not worth it, that is, it will come down more. Don't you think?
Oh, the reason I told you what we paid.....it's about 4 years old now, I think, give or take. So why do you say I need a new one if it should last 10 years?

Not really. I went to my Aunt and Uncle's farm over Easter. They got a new computer and it only cost them $7-800 for it. And that was with just 20 Gigabytes of hard drive space. And such a tiny monitor, too. I doubt if it was bigger than 13".

Personally, I think it's gonna be like VCR's, in that the price for them will come down, but if you want more things, it'll cost more. Like I mentioned above, my aunt and uncle just got a simple computer, not much bigger than my laptop in memory. Laptop's are coming down in price, too, and, IMO, if you want only a small computer, go for a laptop. 1: It's portable. 2: You can basically get the same bells & whistles as a desktop, but in a smaller package.

Oh, the reason I told you what we paid.....it's about 4 years old now, I think, give or take.

That's dang near ancient in the computer industry.

I thought you said you were having problems with it?

Snake,

I understand what you are saying. James is right that 1998 is ancient history. The improvements is speed (efficiency) is staggering. However, I have also seen that people who love computers (use them all the time and are always looking for more speed, more memory, more display and better resolution, etc) tend to forget that a lot of people really don't care. They just want something that works for the two or three or five things they have to use the computer for. They don't care about bells and whistles, they don't care about greater speed (beyond a certain threshold), they just want to know if they can do what they do and that's ok. Many of these people don't open more than one window at a time. And there is nothing wrong with that.

4-5 years is long enough that you would really like the difference in speed. But a 20gig HD would probably be fine. For $700+, you could get a machine that would make what you do on your computer easier and would certainly serve most of your needs in the future.

I think that was James final point. But you probably don't need to get as close to the cutting edge as you can. Depending, of course, on what you use your computer for (Doing high end digital graphics, or digital photography would suggest you should go to very cutting edge).

My $0.02 cents, fwiw

I didn't know if I was having 'computer' problems, my original post was a comment that I had the same problem at Physiofly who said the page was not loading. I thought it was the Internet not my computer. Then we got into the computer question. Hope that clears things up.
