Al Qaeda of Iraq has reportedly offered a bounty of $100,000 for the killing of Swedish cartoonist Lars Vilks. An additional bonus of $50,000 can be yours if Vilks is ritually "slaugthered like a lamb." For a perfect trifecta, a prospective bounty hunter may collect an additional $50,000 for the killing of Ulf Johansson, the editor of the newspaper in which the cartoons appeared, "Nerikes Allehanda."

Swedish police are taking the threat seriously enough to assign an undisclosed number of personnel to the case.

Vilks recently aroused fundy Muslim ire after drawing images of Muhammad as a rather mangy dog. Jihadists insist that the Prophet was a much handsomer animal than the crude mutt drawn by Vilks.

What a pity no one else is publishing it. I guess they're afraid of hurting someone's feelings.

The way I see it is that the feelings of anyone that hung-up on some long-ago, dead guy, who probably would have despised them for the scumbags that they are, deserve no better than they get, and in this case, among others, a lot worse.

I heard Lars Wilks on the radio yesterday.

Paraphrased, he said he was a bit annoyed and unimpressed by the death threat. "It's only $100'000. What do you get for that kind of money these days, anyway? I'm only asking... It's too low a sum to taken seriously, I expected more from them."
(any inaccurracies are due to my fauly memory)
He didn't want to downplay the death threat, but he also thought that we shouldn't blow this out of proportion. The purpose was to create a debate, and as such, the dog served it's purpose.

I hope Vilks really does take the threat seriously enough to take precautions. He should remember filmmaker Theo van Gogh of the Netherlands, killed by a Jihadist in 2004. While I hope Vilks will take this seriously, I also hope he will not restrain his art. From your quote, Vilks seems to have this balance. I wish him the best.

Al Queda in Iraq's made up spokesman also threatened Swedish companies.

In his message, al-Baghdadi also threatened attacks against major Swedish companies if the "crusader state of Sweden" didn't apologize.

Mab you had better quit all that crusading, people are starting to complain. Maybe you should go back to viking.

He isn't stupid. He accepted police escort from the airport when he arrived from abroad. His house is a bit out on the coutryside, so it would be fairly easy to "get to him" as he has said, on the other side, he also said he'd be seeing them coming from far away...

His idea of art isn't just constrained by the piece itself, but he also consider the response that is provoked as part of his art. One of his major piece of art, which he calls Ladonia has been processed by the Swedish court-system for almost 10 years. Authorities consider it hazardous, and a blight on the countryside, and wanted to have it removed. By the time authorities came to take it down, he sold it to some foreign people (don't recall who), who consequently hired him to look after it for them, thereby forcing the authroity to take everything anlother lap around the judicial system. Even the Swedish supreme court has been involved.

That involvment is what he consider part of his art.

And now, Al-Quaida is part of his art.

That's cool. A little deranged, perhaps, but cool.

You need a longboat, several like minded friends and someplace to pillage that is on the coast or along a navigable river.

You don't Vike, you vik..... Go out raiding. No longboat required, and do to modern defences, a wooden boat is not reccomended.

I am not, however, convinced the design should be far off. They were pretty amazing boats.. Able to travel deep water, along coasts, and in shallow waters due to their small draft....

Hell, I wouldn't have minded "shooting" under London Bridge in one.......

The above image doesn't show up on my computer, probably due to network security restrictions. Do you have the same picture on a more secure website?
