And, I heard that one of the reason why suicide was illegal was so that the system could legally put the suicidal person where he can not harm himself and force him to get treated (because, sorry if I repeat myself, a big proportion of suicides are due to the medical syndrome of depression).

Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there – on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.
Carl Sagan - 1996

Amen to that. Your statement needs to be repeated again and again, as there are those who do not comprehend from personal experience - as do you and I - that clinical depression is a terrible disease that frequently is fatal.

These folks would certainly want a person suffering from pneumonia to receive appropiate antibiotics to save their life, but somehow they see a suicidal person in deep depression as one not deserving of understanding or compassion - a if he wants to kill himself, so what? I could care less attitude which simply demonstrates ignorance of the terrible lethal potential of mental disease. The fact is that an overwhelming majority of suicical persons are suffering from clinical depression!

Put in the bus situation, I would act in two different ways, depending on if it were a man or woman. If it was a man I would offer friendship or something of that sort. If it was a woman I'd most likely tell her to take a breather and leave it at that. Being a woman myself I've experienced a few downward spirals and have been completely emotionally crazy :P, and it took time and a few relaxing moments to get myself back to sanity. So based on my experienced and on the experience of my women friends, I'd be more worried about the man and try to put more effort into finding him help.

Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much.
