Revolutionary War vessel found intact! HMS Ontario discovered. (2 page story)

There are a lot of wrecks in the highly dangerous Great Lakes but this is among the oldest. She's under 500 feet of cold water and that helped preserve her, me thinks.
I'm sure they expected to find just a few ribs and spars and maybe some rubble on the bottom if anything, instead there is this extremely well-preserved ship, basically intact.

I think the Royal Navy considers all their lost ships, anywhere in the world, property of the British government. So the wreck is officially a gravesite. However, I hope the explorers get permission to do an extensive photographic recon, maybe with submersible robots.

To digress - in California there's a nice concert hall in the town of Davis called the Mondavi Center and the beautiful new looking polished wood paneling, beams and staircases in it are from lumber that fell in to an Alaskan lake over 100 years ago and lay preserved until dredged up. Apparently very cold water, perhaps with lower oxygen content preserves things.

Excellent! What a terrific find!

I think that we should tell the British Admirlity, "Finder's-keepers!" and start the salvage operation with a minium of delay.

In that case, how much do you think the Captain's snuffbox will go for?

There's now an incredible silent video up on YouTube. Spooky and haunting. Better than the Disneyland pirate ride!
