While idly browsing uncommondescent, I read Dembski's latest offering (June 29th-no link provided on purpose) regarding a new book he has written. I found two things interesting:
#1: The list of people that have endorsed the book. E.g. Michael Egnor, Ann Coulter, Phillip E. Johnson, some people from Baylor University, someone from the IDEA center. What a shock. Hard-core ID fanatics like Dembski's book. Talk about preaching to the already converted.
#2: Please, please, please check out the comments section. It's frickin' hilarious starting at comment #2 (poster russ). Other people latch onto russ' ideas and I think we may be on to a new ID research programme. It should become very fruitful.

So much for the pretense that ID has nothing to do with religion:The book is geared at Christian young people (junior high and high schoolers) as well as for Church groups (e.g., Sunday Schools) to help get out the word about ID — specifically WHAT IS IT? WHY IS IT IMPORTANT? and WHAT YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT?
I was particularly concerned in writing the book to inoculate young people not only against the atheistic poison of Dawkins and Co. but also against the theological and scientific confusions of theistic evolutionists (like Ken Miller and Francis Collins). If this book does its job, both these camps will lose much of their traction with young people. Thanks, Billy-boy. I'm sure you'll see those words in court someday. |

If I understand their argument, they are saying that this world is just too perfect for us to live here.
. . . imagine a puddle waking up one morning and thinking, 'This is an interesting world I find myself in, an interesting hole I find myself in, fits me rather neatly, doesn't it? In fact it fits me staggeringly well, must have been made to have me in it!' This is such a powerful idea that as the sun rises in the sky and the air heats up and as, gradually, the puddle gets smaller and smaller, it's still frantically hanging on to the notion that everything's going to be alright, because this world was meant to have him in it, was built to have him in it; so the moment he disappears catches him rather by surprise. I think this may be something we need to be on the watch out for.

Hey, at least they are trying to think of new things. |
Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

When you've said Anne Coulter, you've said it all. |
