It looks like LA and the country have all but dodged the Gustav bullet, but Hanna is heading up my way (Carolinas), and tropical storm Ike is getting up steam out yonder. It's computer models show it to be on the same track as it's recent predicessors. And then, there are a couple more unnamed holes in the atmosphere behind Ike. It's getting to be sorta like a clay pipe in a shooting gallery, isn't it?

Heh, last year, as I'm sure we all recall, the global warming deniers were crowing about a fortious dearth of hurricanes -- this year, I've heard nary a peep out of 'em on the topic. Wonder why....

Well, we are in the upswing of the hurricane cycle. Global warming doesn't have much to do with the number of storms... but it may well have an impact on the number of big storms.

The last two years had a fairly low number of storms because, by one hypothesis, the major dust clouds blowing off Africa right into the region where these things get their start. There were still several major storms, just none that hit the US.

We will be in the upswing of the hurricane cycle for 5-10 more years, and at the end of that we can go back and look at the number and intensity of storms, compare it to the last couple cycles we have data on, and see if warmer global temp really has correlation to more/more intense storms.
