http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26956957/ What do you make of this, It's the first I've heard of it and it sounds very much like shenanegans to me.

This sure does sound like they are trying to shorten the lifespan of the U and make Earth special again... Im wary of old UK Universities and their theology. |

Well, I don't think it's quite as grand as they're making it sound-- though I admit that I've never heard of this either. That is, when I read that "Earth may be trapped in an abnormal bubble of space-time that is particularly void of matter," my sense is that there would elsewhere in the universe "abnormal bubbles" that are "particularly void of matter" as our is.
And if that's the case, then I don't think it is necessarily a "contradiction to the Copernican principle."
But yeah, if this "bubble" is really unique, then there are problems. |

As far as I know there isnt anything special about our place in the visible universe, it's not like we are passing through a void or something, I just dont get where the hell this bubble came from all of the sudden or how big it is supposed to be for that matter.
edit: MSNBC tells me to go to space.com for more but I find nothing. |

I heard about that theory in the past; basically that the universe was not uniform. It is not particularly 'theological' and does not only apply to the earth as the bubble in question would be particularly big, including many galaxies. |
Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there – on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam. Ooooooookay... Why do you say that? How do you explain the acceleration of the universe expansion? |

That's a bold statement.

Dark matter and Dark energy are imagined concepts created to explain the 95% of the universe which we do not understand. |

| So do you think that if you just rephrase your objection without adding anything new to the discussion, that it makes you more right? |

So perhaps you know of something else besides matter that creates gravity?

Invisible Pink Elephants that travel about the universe.
There is as much evidence for my claim as there is for Dark matter and Dark energy.
