Smacks of desperation, doesn't it? McCain's record of supporting deregulation of financial markets is well documented, but he is secure in the knowledge that few conservatives, if any, will bother to fact-check him. A decade ago, Sen. John McCain embraced legislation to broadly deregulate the banking and insurance industries, helping to sweep aside a thicket of rules established over decades in favor of a less restricted financial marketplace that proponents said would result in greater economic growth.
Now, as the Bush administration scrambles to prevent the collapse of the American International Group (AIG), the nation's largest insurance company, and stabilize a tumultuous Wall Street, the Republican presidential nominee is scrambling to recast himself as a champion of regulation to end "reckless conduct, corruption and unbridled greed" on Wall Street.

| Yeah; the GOP are getting desperate and firing all the volleys they can; especially some that were earlier considered to risky; for example Obama terrorist 'connections'. It is easily debunked and make the GOP looks bad but it might be the last chance they have... |

It's no more than particularly odiferous red herring to get away from talking economics. If Obama is even half as smart as I think he is, he'll treat it as such and with all of the contempt that it deserves.
