William Buckley's son resigns from National Review
Within hours of my endorsement appearing in The Daily Beast it became clear that National Review had a serious problem on its hands. So the next morning, I thought the only decent thing to do would be to offer to resign my column there. This offer was accepted--rather briskly!--by Rich Lowry, NR's editor, and its publisher, the superb and able and fine Jack Fowler. |
Check the link to see just what brought that about...a whole honk load of angry letters.
Even more, go to the Rapture Ready site to see the full extent of the hate-on the right has for Obama:

Yeah, I watched all of that unfold. Oh well.
I thank Christopher Buckley for his honest assessment, in the face his role with the National Review, of this years campaign and his support for Obama.
He is an honest man among political conservatives, who resisted spin over reality. |

On a related note; here is a little bit of scariness coming from California. I did not hear about it before. |
Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there – on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam. These fundy and racist bastards seem to be in a frenzy of fear and loathing. (When I use "bastard," it just means "someone I don't like." No offense meant to those of actual "illegitimate" birth.) Their wonderful, half-built theocracy is coming crashing down. Every loathsome crawling thing in American society has crept out from under slimy rocks this Presidential season (and two of them are actually running for office).
Lying, stupidity, religion.
Excuse me for the triple redundancy.

Speaking of racist bastards, Ed Brayton's found some weird crap.
No offense, but with all of this (this, and what I've seen and posted about elsewhere) is your country going nuts?

Actually; nigrophilia (from latin nigro=black)would be a grammatically correctly constructed term for somebody that has an affinity for black (not necessarily black people but also the colour...).
But; obviously, saying that that Obama's success is due to a positive prejudice toward his skin colour is... well it's retarded.

They don't just dislike Obama, they seem to actually hate him. They don't seem to be able to come up with a reason though. It's all lies, distortions and strawmen. I guess they hate him because he's not only a Muslim liberal socialist terrorist, but also the AntiChrist. Also, he's black, but they are careful not to mention that unfortunate fact... |

No offense, but with all of this (this, and what I've seen and posted about elsewhere) is your country going nuts? | Bear this firmly in mind: The USA is probably the most diverse society in the world. Rascists have always been part of the mix.
Nothing new about racism in the USA. It's been an openly accepted institution, then a covert one -- and it's been our worse national trait.
But the fact that all this overt racism is coming out right now in and around the McCain campaign is probably a good sign, since it's clearly a reactionary response to the fact that Barrack Obama is solidly leading the polls, and likely to become the first (admitted ) African American president. I honestly suspect that, a half century after the Civil Rights movement, caucasian Americans are actually coming to grips with racism.
This campaign, even if Obama wins, won't by itself defeat racism, but it's exposing just how ugly racism is, and making people realize that at least a particular black person may not only be the equal of a particular white person, but indeed may be utterly superior for the office in question.
Modest as that may sound, it's a milestone for the USA. Before 2008, it was actually unthinkable to consider a black person becoming President. Now it's not only has been thought of, it's about to happen. That marks a huge sea-change in this country.
So, to me, the glass is at the half mark, and continuing to fill. I'm proud that my country is maturing at last.

Indeed; the situation is not perfect, but, as I said, the US have made enormous and impressive progresses.
