My daughter caught this, and did a screen save. By the time I looked it up myself, the article about the history of the word "Mormon" was back to its original, even sillier, form.

Doubtless, this act of defacement has something to do with th LDS Church's active involvement in the Proposition 8 campaign in California, which stripped same-sex couples of their right to be married.

Crap! That's how I'll remember that Lovin' Spoonful song now.

It's even worse than it appears
But it's alright-

The Mormons are held in something considerably less than high esteem by the mainline, Christian fundamentalists as well. I'd not rule out the possibility that one of them is responsible. But no matter, either way it's still either a futile gesture or a joke, or, really, both. As is Joe Smith's quaint, little hallucination.

Smith's contemporaries describe his process for finding treasure as placing the stone in a white stovepipe hat, putting his face over the hat to block the light, and then "seeing" the information in the reflections of the stone. His preferred stone, which some said he also used later to translate the golden plates, was chocolate-colored and about the size of an egg, found in a deep well he helped dig for one of his neighbors.
Chocolate colored stones reflecting light from within a darkened hat? More likely phosphenes.
