Same old, same old, really: "If you voted for Obama, you gotta 'fess up and do some sort of silly penance or Mary & her delinquent kid are gonna be pissed!" Or something like that. A California pastor told his parishioners to attend confessional if they had voted for President-elect Barack Obama because of his stance on abortion, the McClatchy Tribune reported.
The Rev. Joseph Illo, pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Modesto, Calif., said voting for a pro-choice candidate amounted to a punishable sin.
“If you are one of the 54 percent of Catholics who voted for a pro-abortion candidate, you were clear on his position and you knew the gravity of the question, I urge you to go to confession before receiving communion. Don't risk losing your state of grace by receiving sacrilegiously,” Illo wrote in a letter dated Nov. 21.
Illo sent the letter to more than 15,000 members of his parish, one of 34 parishes in the Stockton diocese.

It is funny, because it is a purely American phenomenon. People outside the borders, and that include the majority of the Catholic hierarchy, supported the candidate... |

Awwh, poor American Catholic loosers. The are having to resort to punishing there followers for the "Freewill" their god gave them. Not to mention the good sense that comes natural. I hate religion. |

Does that mean that voters for Bush also have to attend confessional if they voted for Bush, given the Vaticans opposition against the Irak war? |

It would be more appropriate if voters for Bush had to attend a fundy service where they'd be handed a poisonous snake, and then have to go quail hunting with Cheany. |

| Ah, but Iraq's merely a war with hundreds of thousands of men, women, and children slaughtered and maimed. That's a minor sin, like priestly pedophilia, worth a passing homily, no more. Nothing much compared the horrid sin of a woman not taking a fetus to term. The Vatican has our moral priorities all sorted out for us.
