The King in this article is Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa).

After telling the Associated Press last year that Obama's middle name was among the reasons Islamic terrorists would rejoice over his election, King says he's since been careful to avoid using it. Thus he found Obama's decision to allow it be mentioned on the steps of the Capitol “bizarre” and “a double-standard.”

“Is that reserved just for him, not his critics?” King asked.

The congressman says he doubts Obama's sincerity when he explained that he chose to use his middle name so as to be historically consistent with past inaugurations, when America has heard the full names of its presidents echo from the inaugural stand.

“Whatever his reasons are,” King said, “the one he gave us could not be the reason.”

Note to Republicans: Please keep fine Real Americans(tm) like Rep. King out front and public. That is all.

Yes! He's exactly what I, as a Democrat, want Americans to think of when they hear the word, "Republican."

What I don't get is what the big problem is with the name Hussein in the first place. Sure, sure, the former non-WMD-possesseing ruler of Iraq has it as his last name. Big deal. Wasn't there a certain George that the American colonies went to war against?

The reality is that Hussein is just a name. It's Arabic, but so what. So's alcohol, algebra, and chemistry. Do we shy away from those, too??

It seems that most of the hoopla over "Hussein" is due to two related factors that resonate particularly well with large swaths of the modern Republican Party. First, there's the xenophobia factor. Barrak Husseun Obama is certainly not an American-sounding name, and clearly some GOP zealots played that up as much as possible. Second, there's the race factor. Not only is Obama dark-skinned, but his very name-- Hussein!-- is a name for brown people!!!!!!!

In some small triumph for this country, a lot of GOP hit men were called out for trying to turn Obama's middle name into an albatross, and guys like Rep King are now trying to twist that.

King is a bit player in the world of US politics. (He was probably more influential when he was writing those good horror novels. Oh, wait...) But we can bet that Rush, et al. will pick up on this meme and run with it...

“Is that reserved just for him, not his critics?” King asked.
But the only thing King is a "critic" of is the name.

Maybe King should consider using the Hebrew version of that ancient, pre-Islamic Semetic name, Hussein? That would be "Chasin." No, that wouldn't work either, as then he'd probably be complaining about a President with a "Jewy" middle name.
