I loved his swipe at the Big Government dip shits: It's not about whether government's too big or too small, it's about whether government WORKS. I'm euphoric from hearing a president speak intelligently and with common sense over ideology. Eight years of embarrassing speech (and policy) from the Whitehouse are finally over. WOO HOO! |

How about.... "We will restore science to its rightful place". Fantastic words to hear. Good riddance to Bush's voodoo/fumbling/mucking around with science programs.
Thumbs up too, on that "and nonbelievers".
I"m going to miss Dave Lettermans's "Great Presidential Moments".

I think our President understands that science has suffered under the repression of Bush's fundamentalism, that nonbelievers have been demonized by Bush's fundy allies in the rightist media. He feels that both of these excesses are so dangerous that in this first act of office he must begin to correct them.

Fox 'News' Chris Wallace suggest Obama may not be President
"Well, again, we're wondering here whether or not Barack Obama in fact is the president of the United States," Chris Wallace told Fox News viewers, well over an hour after Obama had taken the oath of office today. |

| Indeed idiots. When you got nothing, cast doubt, however tenuous. I suggest that we now have a new three-letter dirty word, which we should use in our best cussing: "Fox."
Phrases like "Fox that lying mother-foxer" come to mind.

They sure are fox-face! All of them! |
Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there – on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam. | The only thing this casts doubt on is Chris Wallace's sanity. Obama became president at noon, with or without the oath. And even if not, all he would have to do is take it again.
Obama did Roberts a favor by letting him correct himself, because it was Roberts who flubbed his part of the thing. |

Without looking it up, I'm pretty sure there is no requirement for an oath in the constitution. He could have said "I promise to do my duty, to do my best, to help the girl scouts, get undressed" and still been president. Although people listening on the radio would have thought we put Clinton back in.
I thought that link was going to lead to a rehash of the "he's not a citizen" nonsense. But everyone seems to have given up on that, except for one person on the Skepticality board.

So far as I know, Alan Keyes still has a lawsuit pending over Obama's alleged non-citizenship. It's moot now, but a hearing is allegedly this-coming Friday. |

PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 20, 2009
Center for Inquiry Leaders Applaud Obama's Progressive and Inclusive Vision for America
President Barack Obama in his history-making Inaugural Address today sounded the clarion call for a more inclusive and progressive America. The President's speech outlined a largely humanistic agenda, promising to “restore science to its rightful place,” as we collectively face the massive challenges facing us as a country in the twenty-first century. Significantly, in affirming the pluralistic character of American society, President Obama expressly included “non-believers” among Christians, Muslims, Jews and Hindus, as part of the body politic.
“It truly is a historic and remarkable achievement of significance that the President of the United States referred to non-believers in recognition of the growing number of Americans—now numbering tens of millions—who hold no religious affiliation. As far as we are aware, this is the first time this has happened,” said Paul Kurtz, chairman and founder of the Center for Inquiry. “It is also noteworthy that he called for the restoration of science to its rightful place and the application of technology to the improvement of human life. We applaud his courageous optimism in outlining an audacious program for the future,” said Kurtz.
Ronald A. Lindsay, president and CEO of the Center for Inquiry, emphasized the importance of President Obama's acknowledgment. “For much of American history, agnostics and atheists were denied important civil rights, and in some states, until the early 1960's, were explicitly forbidden from holding public office. Even after these legal constraints had been removed, nonbelievers were stigmatized or ignored by most politicians. We are encouraged that President Obama has unambiguously indicated he will be the president of all Americans.”
The Center for Inquiry/Transnational is a nonprofit, educational, advocacy, and scientific-research think tank based in Amherst, New York It is home to the Council for Secular Humanism, founded in 1980, the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry (formerly CSICOP), founded in 1976, and the Commission for Scientific Medicine and Mental Health. Their research and educational projects focus on three broad areas: religion, ethics, and society; paranormal and fringe-science claims; and medicine and health. The Center's Web site is www.centerforinquiry.net . |

That's stupendous.
| Indeed.
BTW, I'd posted the OP during the speech itself, from verbal memory. I was just so astounded to finally be spoken to like a full citizen of this country, I just couldn't wait.
The text as posted by CNN is slightly different, putting a dash before "and nonbelievers," indicating a longer pause than my comma implies, and thus greater emphasis on the final two words.
Also, Richard Allen Greene at CNN.com wrote an analysis of the speech, citing its influences and sources. One of the things Greene wrote of was that sentence, which is actually an improvement of a line from a Martin Luther King, Jr, speech:"We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus -- and nonbelievers," Obama said, a contemporary variation on King's hope that "Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics" would one day join hands and sing. | Because that is a change to a MLK phrase, I find Obama's phrasing doubly significant.
I want to add a mention that I have no problem with "nonbeliever." It's a perfectly fine, neutral word, like atheist, in my opinion. "Freethinker" is fine with me, too, but to be fair, it's not really neutral.

| It makes me shudder and want to hide. "Brights" actually justifies a pogrom against atheists.
