Um. Sounds like the zookeepers have some responsibility here.
If they are trying to breed ducks, why not put one of each sex into the enclosure, leave them be, and hope for the best? You know, sort of give them less freedom of choice for a bit?
At least try it. Then, after they either breed or refuse to, let the happy male couple be reunited. Not that I'm saying that's a good strategy for other species (such as humans), but these are endangered ducks.
"Extinction in the UK" is a dumb phrase. That's like running out of mole rats in Arkansas. In New Zealand, blue ducks are not facing extinction, but are endangered. The zoo might consider getting requesting a few more ducks from the Kiwis for their breeding program, maybe with the promise to give back some of the hatchlings.

That tears it, I'm reporting you to Fred Phelps! | I had to throw that in, or it'd look as though I might think that gays can be "reformed." I'm walkin' a PC tightrope, here. I'm assuming the male ducks may be bisexual. They may turn out to be thoroughly festive, however. (Not that I see anything wrong with that!) In that case, the female is going to remain disappointed.

Get a load of this:
Gay penguins stealing eggs from straight penguins.
Somebody report to Phelps, Rapture Ready, etc.

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.
Another example of this guy's lunacy here. |

BINGO: Now that may illustrate at least one evolutionary reason for gayness. If a gay couple steals fertile eggs, the mated hetero pair will probably be induced to lay eggs again.
This means two clutches of eggs are potentially being hatched instead of one. So it makes sense for the species to make good use of the non-hetero-mated pairs like this.
Wouldn't there almost always be a few extra males or extra females to pair off after all the both-gender pairings have been made? By stealing eggs (and potentially feeding hatchlings), these gay birds help the species to survive.
After fencing off the egg-thieves from the other birds, the keepers said, "It's not discrimination." (Actually it is discrimination.) It would have been instructive to learn how well the gay birds tended the eggs and raised the young.

Okay, okay, it's hard to see how that behavior is advantageous to survival.
And it's just my opinion, but when it comes down to a duck boinking a duck corpse, homosexuality don't even count as a factor. That researcher was just trying to sex up his title. (Maybe he'd heard rumors about his paper reviewers.)

Maybe there had been earlier reports of heterosexual necrophilia in Anas platyrhynchos (and the family name is only one letter away from a gay joke) and he just needed it to be the first something to get published. |
Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there – on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam. At a meeting of out local naturalist club about twenty years ago we had a presentation by a researcher who was studying nesting shorebirds in the Arctic. While there they documented a male American Golden Plover try to mate with the carcass of a male Black-bellied Plover, a case of inter-specific homosexual necrophilia! |
