And I'm not all that sure he was joking.
VIDEO: Huckabee Jokes About Keeping Voters Away from the Polls in VA Gubernatorial Election
Because nothing is more hilarious than American voter suppression!

While out on the stump for VA's Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell, former Gov. Mike Huckabee made an hysterical joke to the laughing assembled crowd of Republicans, instructing them to "Do the lord's work" by not letting voters to the polls if they don't plan to vote for McDonnell.

HUCKABEE: You have two jobs. One - get all those people who are gonna vote for Bob out to the polls and vote. If they're not gonna vote for Bob, you have another job. Let the air out of their tires and do not let them out of their driveway on Election Day. Keep 'em home. Do the lord's work, my friend. I'm giving you an opportuninty...yes, do the right thing.
Of course, it was just a joke. Who in the Republican Party would ever do such a thing in his country?!
How quickly we forget; in the days of Hitler's ascent to power, when Germany was still a democracy, his Sturmabteilung, the so-called Brownshirts, did exactly that.

So I ask: did our Mikey make a really stupid joke, or was he maybe making a suggestion?

Laughing reaction or not, that was an illegal instruction to Republicans to prevent opponents from voting.

Huckabee should go to jail.

It was a joke, so no, he should not go to jail.
But it was not a funny joke, as to the question:
Who in the Republican Party would ever do such a thing in his country?!

a) I take it they are not against fixing elections in foreign countries, that's good to know.
b) Huh... George W. Bush in 2000?

Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there – on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.
Carl Sagan - 1996
