AP to Aggregators: We Will Sue You
By John C Abell April 06, 2009 | 5:03:17 PM

The Associated Press board voted Monday to "pursue legal and legislative actions" against aggregators who use content without permission, a new shot across the bow of internet news sites in the war over how little use is "fair use."

The AP named no potential targets, yet speculation immediately turned to Google. While the search giant pays the AP to host full versions of wire service stories, it generally does not have contracts with AP member newspapers whose headlines it also aggregates on its news portal. The AP has also made no bones about pursuing individual bloggers, as it did the Drudge Retort last June.

Well, I don't think we really don't want them to die. AP has reporters all over the globe that provide an essential service. Defining and refining fair use laws as they apply to the internet does not seem to me to be inherently wrong.

If an individual blogger (Drudge) posts most of, or all of an AP story, AP should be compensated, don't you think? I mean, they did all the leg work and someone has to pay for it.

What we are seeing is the evolution of fair use by both AP and the bloggers.

Uncertainty may make you uncomfortable. Certainty makes you ridiculous.

Why not question something for a change?

Write in haste, repent at leisure, eh? That was a bit more fulsome than it needed to be.

But as more and more people get virtually all of their hard news from the Internet, AP will evolve to accommodate it or, as the Theory of Evolution teaches us, it's niche will be taken by another, more resilient species. This also holds true for the blogs.
