Just another proof that FOX News really is FAUX News. At a Sacramento Teabagging rally, FOX baglicker Neil Cavuto estimated off-air (but unfortunately for him, on a live mic) that attendance was at 5,000, "maybe more."

Ten minutes later, Cavoto tripled that, saying on air that the crowd was "... easily double if not triple that."

In the video at the link above, FOX cameras showed the crowd from ground level, with only the first ranks visible, so that there was no way to know from watching that attendance was actually larger than a
few hundred.

Signs that were visible were of the wacko wingnut type, claiming that Obama's America is "socialist."

FOX promoted these GOP rallies from the start, and even had their "journalists" such as Laura Ingraham (see the video at the link above titled "Media split on 'tea parties'") address crowds with anti-Obama harangues.

How much of a blatant, purely partisan propaganda organ does FOX have to be before the FCC starts taking away their license to use public airways?

I would say a lot more considering MSNBC still has a license.

Bill. There is a difference between political commentary and actually promoting a political event by a news organization.

Show me where MSNBC has done that, will you?

A political event? Wouldn't the 2008 election be an event? MSNBC was the biggest promoter out there for THEIR candidate, and BO didn't have to pay a dime from his campaign for this fawning.

Watch them tonight.

If you notice I did not try to push the notion that Fox does not spin, but if your going to sit here and try to claim that they are the only ones and MSNBC does nothing but report and commentary then that is just silly and naive.

MSNBC spins. But again, show me where MSNBC helped to organize and take part in a political protest. You can't count commentary. We are both aware that commentary and spin happens on both networks. What Fox did went much farther.

Where did you read that Fox helped organize the event? I missed that. Not saying they didn't, only that I missed it if they did.

Bill, I could search for a clip for each time they did it. But this should suffice.

Ahhh, here's another one:

Fox News Admits To Tea Party P.R., Complains Of Media Coverage

You know Brent, it's been interesting because Fox News covered these Tea Parties, and we were one of the only organizations to give it any publicity or p.r. prior to the fact that it happened, and it was so under-covered by virtually every news organization. Why is that? Why was it so ignored up until the very last day by virtually everyone.

Can't argue with that.

While I would agree that that seems to be taking "commentary" a little to far I am not surprised.

It's common knowledge to anyone that Fox is the tank for the right and MSBC is the tank for the left.

So getting back to the op, my comment is, big deal! Fox is the tank for the right, no shocking new revelations here.

This would be akin to me posting a thread as hot off the presses that MSNBC secretly was in the tank for Obama. Really? You don't say...

I guess what I am really try to get at is the irony here that I see. To help protect myself from being indoctrinated I make sure to get an even dose of all. I watch Anderson Cooper on CNN, Keith and Rachael on MSNBC, and then Hannity and Bill O on Fox. My conclusion: They all spin, all the time.

So it just kills me when I converse with those who consider themselves from the right how they go on and on and on about how MSNBC is the tank for Obama.

The first thing I usually want to say is, "well dah!!!" And the second is, "Well what about Fox?"

Then when I converse with a mostly left crowd it is the same, but different. "Fox news has an agenda against Obama and the left."

First thing: Well Dah!!!!

Second: What about MSNBC?

Bill:
While I would agree that that seems to be taking "commentary" a little to far I am not surprised.

But you see, a little too far is a very real issue. Yes, there is a bias at both Fox and MSNBC. But there are also rules, probably legal and certainly ethical, that a news organization must adhere to, no matter what their bias is. News organizations are allowed by the 1st amendment to comment on the news. But they are not allowed to actually play a purposeful role in making the news. When commentary turns into political activism, the problem becomes a big one. Action goes even beyond propaganda, or rates as propaganda at its worst, unless we allow for no ethical guidelines for news departments at all.

And I tell you this; I would be just as upset if MSNBC actively promoted a political event, rather than just commenting on it. It's wrong, it's not ethical, and it's probably not legal. My hope is that we find out about the legality of a news department helping to create an actual political news event that supports their bias, themselves.

I don't see this as a trivial matter.

Maybe they were confused and thought that someone would be teabagging Laura Ingraham, which would bring a much larger crowd. I would pay to watch that.

I'm never impressed with replies to comments about Fox News and its clear right wing agenda when they're of the the-rest-of-the-media-are-liberal meme.

The reality is that while it's easy to pick out some news segment or story slant that looks like it's "liberal", in general, the mainstream media can hardly be described as such. Instead, it seems pretty clear that the non-Fox sources (e.g. MSNBC, CNN, etc.) are just pretty lazy and parrot whatever sort of talking point is thrown their way. The whole "Obama is gutting the military" that's made the rounds this week is just the latest example.

Conversely, can anyone imagine Fox letting, say, Rachel Maddow host a show on their network, like CNN let Glen Back do on their network?

The "liberal media" meme is a myth that persists to this day, along with that myth-- as pushed by out so-called liberal media-- that Gore said he "invented" the internet...

I'm rather curious about the legality of Fox News supporting (or creating, sponsoring, etc.) the protest. Kil mentioned he thinks they may be illegal, but does anyone have any other information regarding this?

It seems to me like not allowing a news organization to create a protest is what would violate the 1st amendment.

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

I think Kil is harkening back to the days of the "Fairness Doctrine," which was never a part of the First Amendment, for sure.

News organizations are free to support, promote and even lobby for whatever politicians they choose. How much they do so should obviously be taken into account when assessing how "unbiased" they are, but there's nothing illegal or unconstitutional about it.
