I didn't have to worry about the draft because I was already in the service with every intention of becoming a "lifer." It didn't work out that way, but whadda hell -- it didn't work out real well for lots of folks both in and out.

I was ambivalent about the protesters. On one hand, I could understand where they were coming from, but on the other, they seemed to denigrate my uniform and service, things that I took some pride in.

In the end, Vietnam was a reeking pile of political bullshit and in the clarity of hindsight, the protesters were right. How little things change, eh?

One of the terrible mistakes we made was to blame the people in uniform. We wanted everyone to resist. If you weren't one of us, you were one of them, was kind of our attitude. We were myopic in our view service people and often felt betrayed by the very people we were working to save.

It's because we were mostly kids, I think. Back then, I was never wrong...


Uncertainty may make you uncomfortable. Certainty makes you ridiculous.

Why not question something for a change?
