Wherein a parade of ill-inspired buffoons flaunt their nonsense and testify their ignorance. Link.

"Democratic leaders in the House are pushing hard to get a comprehensive climate and energy bill passed by summer, with discussion of their draft bill slated to begin this week. But at hearings designed to discuss the particulars of climate policy, Republican representatives and their witnesses have been bogging down the proceedings with skeptical rants and cockamamy theories.

Take, for example, the March 25 hearing on climate-change adaptation in the House Subcommittee on Energy and Environment, chaired by Rep. Ed Markey (D-Mass.).

“The earth will end only when God declares its time is over,” declared Rep. John Shimkus (R-Ill.), explaining why it's unnecessary to worry about climate change. In an exchange with witness Lord Christopher Monckton (more on him below), Shimkus suggested the planet is “carbon-starved” and asked, “If we decrease the use of carbon dioxide, are we not taking away plant food from the atmosphere? ... So all our good intentions could be for vain. In fact, we could be doing the opposite of what the people who want to save the world are saying.”

Rep. Joe Barton (R-Texas) chimed in with his own analysis: “Adapting is a common natural way for people to adapt to their environment ... I believe that the earth's climate is changing, but I think it's changing for natural variation reasons,” he said. “And I think mankind has been adopting, or adapting to climate as long as man has walked the earth. When it rains, we find shelter. When it's hot, we get shade. When it's cold, we find a warm place to stay.”

A few weeks earlier, at a hearing on renewable power, Barton raised the question of whether expanding wind power might actually cause the planet to heat up:"

I do not recall anything in the Bible concerning atmospheric science. So, why is it, I ask, that the the least qualified among us, who have nothing constructive to add -- indeed, quite the contrary -- are given a voice at all?

Well, that's democracy, I suppose, but does it mean that we must suffer fools gladly?

Of course the Earth has changed throughout billions of years, no one is denying that. But our activities really do make a difference, and I don't think there is much doubt that we are a big factor behind recent climate changes. I am sure that in time we will be able to settle on the Moon and Mars, and other worlds, so of course we will be able to adapt to a changed Earth as well. But it seems like a good idea to slow down the current climate changes, because adapting to some of the possible scenarios will be very difficult and expensive. The wealthiest parts of the world might deal with it well enough, but what about the rest?

Democracy can be great and it can be really bad. It's important that our representatives read up on current issues, scientific or other, or at least listen to the experts in the relevant fields.

That's always been a fundamental drawback of democracy, that the opinions of the idiots count just as much as anyone else's.

More repug ignorance:

STEPHANOPOULOS: So what is the responsible way? That's my question. What is the Republican plan to deal with carbon emissions, which every major scientific organization has said is contributing to climate change?

BOEHNER: George, the idea that carbon dioxide is a carcinogen that is harmful to our environment is almost comical. Every time we exhale, we exhale carbon dioxide. Every cow in the world, you know, when they do what they do, you've got more carbon dioxide. And so I think it's clear...

STEPHANOPOULOS: So you don't believe that greenhouse gases are a problem in creating climate change?

You can see the weird shit in the linked article and its source.

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.

Another example of this guy's lunacy here.

Gag! Boehner is a total ignoramus, and is trying to teach his "knowledge" to others!

Whence the non sequitur about carbon dioxide not being a "carcinogen"? Since when was did anyone say that was so, or make it part of the MMGW debate??? Also, cows (and GOP House members) fart methane, a much different greenhouse gas, not carbon dioxide. (Seriously, I'd like to replace Boehmer's CO2 fire extinguisher with one that contains methane.)

The GOP has apparently decided that science is even more dangerous than socialism.

Odd language tidbit:
Boehner is originally a German name. Its German pronunciation is a homonym with the Swedish word for beans. Which seems appropriate, since he's obviously a gas-bag.

Yeh, but let's keep him going. After all, any highschool student who pays attention in General Science class can take his "arguments" down with ease. And the American public is not entirely stupid.

I gotta give Bohner a little credit, though -- the oaf can talk longer and say less than anyone I've seen in quite a while.

If you thought Boehner was stupid, check out Michele Bachmann in this Youtube clip. (Via Bad Astronomy)

Highlights:

- co2 is natural
- not one study has found that co2 is harmful

Apropos of nothing, that would translate into "Beaner" in English, unfortunately an ethnic slur towards Mexicans and Hispanic Americans, due to fijoles being a Mexican and Southwestern staple. Still fits with the gas-bag hypothesis, though.

Try this little thought-experiment with Bachmann's speech:

Imagine her speaking on legislation to fund the repair of New Orleans' anti-flood levees. With me so far? Now, substitute "H2O" for "carbon dioxide" each time she says the latter. The analogy works pretty well. Water is a "natural product of nature," vital to life. So's carbon dioxide.

It's a good thing. Why tax businesses to combat a bounty of God's nature?

With or without the above substitution, what stands out is Bachmann's avoidance of any mention of the possibility that there may be too much of a good thing. H2O, when it rises over the heads of people, becomes dangerous. So does carbon dioxide when it rises above historical levels and begins raising the oceans and drastically altering the world's climate.

And here's another interesting, little factoid: Carbon dioxide in water forms carbonic acid, which can add to the acids produced by pollution -- sulphur dioxide and nitrogen, forming sulfuric & nitric acids, respectively. If enough of this stuff gets into the environment in the form of acid rain, there would be a major forestry, fishery and agricultural disaster.

Bachmann needs to get her meds reviewed and updated.
