I am not surprised, I actually had a similar experience in a high school class (in "Western Civ" no less). In any case, I agree with PZ that the Bible does have some historical/literary value and that its use is not necessarily a negative. Certainly some will use it as an excuse to teach and advocate their religion. |

So the argument would go:
Science and religion have equally valid viewpoints (except where science contradicts religion: that's persecution) so should be taught side by side. But since America is and always has been a Christian nation (echoes of 1984's "Oceania and East Asia are at war. They have always been at war."), the only valid counterpoint for science must be the Christian creation myth, not the Hindu or Navajo creation myths.
