Thanks, Mab. Ding and Ling were long past overdue for a return. During the interregnum, I just didn't think of any ideas that required their piping little Comic Sans voices. The OP above did, however.

I'm beginning to worry that people may not be getting my intended meaning in the above cartoon. Miscommunicating like that is a common fault of mine. I may (or may not) need to tune up my approach.
How did you folks interpret the cartoon?

With a deep helping of irony!
Obviously, they are in awe and wonderment at the magnificent spectacle above their heads... |
Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there – on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam. Carl Sagan - 1996 |

| Oh, thank you! What seemed obvious at first to me was giving way to doubt.

Sometimes, in my more pessimistic moments, I think doing the stuff I do is like shooting fish in a barrel. In a pitch-dark warehouse mainly full of pickle barrels. Thanks for the reality check.
BTW, I wasn't questioning anyone else's subtlety of mind, just my own.

I agree with Dave. What started out as ironic tipped over to sarcasm in the last bubble. I love it. |

| Thanks. Personally, that very effect of looking into a star-filled sky (something almost impossible in the light-polluted, foggy Bay Area) is one of the ways I can get my humility and awe quotient. Others are a walk in a quiet Redwood forest, or standing on a bluff above an ocean beach. I defy anyone to tell of knows a splendorous cathedral that is more humbling than is looking upon a vista of the natural universe. It puts our noisy human affairs in their proper scale.
