Spokesman Denies Responsibility for Pandemic

Some alleged "Hoppapa" members.

Mexico City (Science News Now)
-- Hoppapa, a specialized and previously little-known Mexican group that calls itself "a private social club for swine, birds, and the men who love them," today vehemently denied that its members were in any way implicated in the recent outbreak of the Mexican H1N1 Swine Influenza.

Spokesman Juan Morales-Carrillo said, "Just because the H1N1 flu virus contains a few human, swine and avian genetic components doesn't mean Hoppapa had anything to do with . . . ah, ah, ah-choo!"

Hoppapa, which stands for el Hombre-Porcina-Pájaro Asociación por Amor -- or in English, the Man-Swine-Bird Love Association -- was founded in 1985 by Carrillo, a Mexico City real estate agent. Hoppapa claims to have over 50,000 members, but detractors assert that the vast majority of those are very nervous chickens and pigs on ranchos operated by a half-dozen human members.
