Since the Segway has so radically transformed both our lives and modern society itself, I thought the newest project by its inventor, Dean Kamen, was interesting. As you can see, this time around, calling the thing a "scooter" could not be considered spiteful.

Eco-Hybrid Concept

Multimillionaire inventor behind the Segway personal transporter, Dean Kamen, is developing a new bike that combines electric power and a radical generator which will permit it to burn virtually any fuel. Established around a conventional battery and electric motor combo to provide the drive to the wheel, the unique part of the design is the inclusion of a Stirling engine to recharge the bike's battery pack. Founded on technology that precedes the internal combustion engine by nearly a century, the Stirling engine is closer in construction to a steam engine that could run on virtually anything that burns thus opening the door to easily renewable fuels.

Looks interesting, and maybe more marketable than the Segway.

Some small town police forces up here in Canada have some for patrolling certain areas, but the general public is still not allowed to use them thanks to government intransigence and a few light years of red tape. Fie on them, and a pox on all their houses.

I not going to hold my breath for this one, "burn virtually any fuel". If that happens what's to stop just anyone from stripping out the power plant and use the heat from a fusion reactor to power a home. Just try to find a manufactured sterling for sale, besides a toy. I can't, 10 hp or less.SS

If it works at all, I suspect "burn virtually any fuel" would tend to translate into "create virtually any kind of smoke."

Their seems to be some prohibition against manufacturing of sterling engines. Try finding a manufactured source for sale, besides toys. I can't. I want one up to 10 hp, just not made or avaliable. SS
