Could it be divine intervention that's kept Florida safe from hurricanes since Gov. Charlie Crist took office?

Crist said he isn't trying to take credit, but he told a group of real estate agents Friday that he's had prayer notes placed in the Western Wall in Jerusalem each year and no major storms have hit Florida.

Crist noted that just before his election in 2006, Florida had been affected by a total of eight hurricanes in 2004 and 2005.

"Do you know the last time it was we had a hurricane in Florida? It's been awhile. In 2007, I took my first trade mission. Do you know where I went?" said Crist, a Methodist, referring to a trip to Israel.

He then told of going to the Western Wall and inserting a note with a prayer. He said it read, "Dear God, please protect our Florida from storms and other difficulties. Charlie."

FL's screwed.

Crist just had to run his mouth about it and jinx the whole thing. The next 25 whirly-girls wandering in from Africa will likely pay his state a visit, possibly all at once.

How easily they forget that the only Law of the Universe that actually means anything at all is Murphy's.

PZ posted about this, with a link to a poll about what people think about the Gov's prayers. "Another good reason not to vote for him!" now has 95% of the vote.

If the governor had claimed that Florida had not been attacked by space aliens because he had sent notes to the leader of the Gloxorns from the crab nebula, people would, rightly so, point out that he was completely insane and question his ability to discharge his duties as governor. What's the difference here?

Well, a staggering percentage of FL's population devoutly worships a fractured version of Lord Gloxorn and would believe every word of it. No difference, really.

The truth of the matter is that FL is home to such notables as Kent Hovind, and Rush Limbaugh, among many other conservative notables, and the hurricanes might have been avoiding it in disgust.

Ah, but the season is just into it's most active stage -- our Charlie may have spoken too soon. It's far better to spout such crap in the dead of winter and then claim the credit when it's safe.

Also, it's a been a pretty tame season thus far, so his bet might be at least semi-safe. However, I remind that the FL Panhandle got a tropical soaker not so very long ago.

I wouldn't vote for him even if he turned water into Thunderbird.

So... when a hurricane finally strikes Florida, does that mean that God doesn't exist or just that he disproves of Governor Crist?

Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there – on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.

Charlie Crist is something special. Crist is likely a closeted gay politician who denies homosexuals the right to marriage or to adoption, and is one of the subjects of a documentary about anti-gay gay politicians, Outrage. Since he's already such a flaming hypocrite on gay rights, it's not a stretch to imagine he may also be a closet atheist who's playing the fundamentalists of Florida for his own benefit.

Filthy's dead-on right. When Crist in effect takes credit ("I'm not saying I got God to stop them -- I'm just sayin'") for a lack of destructive hurricanes in Florida, he is just begging for trouble from the real Supreme Being, a fellow named Murphy. Unless he pulls a Palin, Crist's term as governor has several hurricane seasons to go, and Florida is still just free-balling out there in the Caribbean.

Perhaps, but it might also mean that, unlike the pious Gov, his constituants, the Democratioc ones especally, are happily sinning night and day, and God is really a bit miffed at them.

My advice would be to have an entire thesis crammed into the Western Wall to make up for all that fornication & sodomy & stuff that he's not doing. Is he?

I sure it will mean that God just got tired of Florida governors shoving litter into his wall.

The 2004 and 2005 hurricane seasons ended up costing Florida several billion dollars, a handful of lives, and delivered a lot of personal tragedy to people where those storms hit and destroyed things.

So if Charlie has the clout to pray away hurricanes, why didn't he do it then? Why would he save that power for personal political gain while he is gov?

You're an evil motherfucker Charlie! That or you're a piece of shit political opportunist. Not a lot of difference.

Crist is praying to the wrong god. Everyone knows you have to appease Poseidon if you want to avoid typhoons.

Yes, appeal to empirical evidence if it seems to be on your side, and when it doesn't, go on to the skeptics about how bad it is to be a "Doubting Thomas" and to "test God." Have your cake and eat it too.
