Story here.
| A U.S. couple on vacation captured the image while they were hiking in May. The photo garnered international attention--particularly from quick-fingered Photoshoppers who've since placed the squirrel in unusual situations-- after it was featured on the National Geographic website. |

'T'ain't a squirrel, It's one of the marmots, possibly a woodchuck. Could be a western rock chuck as well.
I don't get it either. What is the signifence of the marmot?
And 'mooner, properly prepared, they are excellent on the plate, although I confess I've never tried a 'chuck cheesburger.

Too vague a classification. While in the same family as squirrels, they are their own genus.
Marmots are members of the genus Marmota, in the rodent family Sciuridae (squirrels).
Marmots are generally large ground squirrels. Those most often referred to as marmots tend to live in mountainous areas such as the Alps, northern Apennines, Carpathians, Tatra, and Pyrenees in Europe, the Rockies, the Black Hills and the Sierra Nevada in the United States, Northern Canada, Deosai plains in Pakistan and Ladakh in India. However, the groundhog is also properly called a marmot, while the similarly-sized but more social prairie dog is not classified in the genus Marmota but in the related genus Cynomys.
