Long ago, something very important took place here. What happened was very important, and shapes much of what we see around ourselves today.
1. What happened here?
2. Where is this place and what is it called?

The large city is Merida in Mexico, on the Yucatan peninsula. The geological feature is the Chicxulub crater, which was created about 65 million years ago and is theorized to have been from the comet strike which caused the extinction at the end of the Cretaceous.
One second to identify the location plus a minute to look up how to spell Chicxulub. |

| Dang! That was good. Correct for two more points.
Now, I've got to get back to work again. I hope the next one's harder.

Well, to be perfectly honest. I had been looking at Google maps trying to spot all the Mayan ruins I had visited on a vacation in Merida in the mid-90s when I decided to pop over to SFN and see if you had put up a new geography question.
On the other hand, the mole at the coastal town of Progreso (the white thing sticking out from the north coast) is a pretty distinctive feature, so I suspect my first guess would have been Merida even if I had not just been looking at the same image. |

| Well, good luck is always welcome, too. At least you have a fine visual memory.
